Franz Völker, "Gott, welch Dunkel hier", Beethoven: Fidelio (DG, 1933)German jugendlicher Heldentenor Franz Völker (1899-1965) in Florestan's solo scene "Gott, welch Dunkel hier" from Act 2 of Beethoven's Fidelio, recorded for Deutsche Grammophon in 1933. The following biographical profile of the singer comes from Allmusic.com: "A tenor with a voice of dramatic size and strength, Franz Völker wisely avoided the most heroic roles of Richard Wagner where he could not compete in sheer volume with such a phenomenon as Lauritz Melchior. Yet, as Lohengrin, he was the only artist to rival the Danish tenor for beauty of sound and adherence to legato tone production. With or without such imposing competition, the German tenor still would have been celebrated as a superior singer, not lacking intensity, but holding first and last to full-throated, polished vocalism — proof that a bel canto approach did indeed exist among the best German artists. After studies in Frankfurt, Völker made his debut in that city with Florestan in a 1926 production of Fidelio. He had been heard by conductor Clemens Krauss who, then and later, took a solicitous interest in his career and whose support hastened his rise to the top among Central European dramatic tenors. Although Völker's instrument had substantial heft from the very beginning, he had the easy production to sing Mozart with surpassing elegance and several studio recordings exist to confirm this. Völker remained at Frankfurt until he moved to Vienna in 1931. Berlin heard him from 1933 to 1943. After several ...

Franz Völker, "In fernem Land", Lohengrin (Live, Bayreuth, 1936, W. Furtwängler, cond.)(Re-upload with a new, improved audio source file) German jugendlicher Heldentenor Franz Völker (1899-1965) in "In fernem Land" from Act 3 of Wagner's Lohengrin, coming from a live performance at the Bayreuth Festival on 19 July 1936 conducted by Wilhelm Furtwängler. Anton Dermota in "Der musensohn" , Franz SchubertRecording from 1967. At piano is his wife, Hilda Dermota. Anton Dermota: Born: June 4, 1910 - Kropa, Slovenia Died: June 22, 1989 - Vienna, Austria Anton Dermota was born in Kropa (Slovenia) grewing up in poverty. Initially studying composition and organ at the Ljubljana conservatory, he received a scholarship in 1934 which took him to Vienna where he devoted himself exclusively to vocal studies with the famous coach Marie Radó. Anton Dermota made his early debut at the opera of Cluj (Klausenburg) in 1934. It was Bruno Walter who immediately invited him to the Vienna State Opera where he made his debut in 1936 as first Man in Armour Mozart's The Magic Flute. His first major role was Alfredo in La Traviata in 1937. He remained a loyal member of the Wiener Staatsoper for more than 40 years (!) and became one of the most popular and celebrated singers by the Viennese public. He also succeeded at the Salzburg Festival where he appeared regularly for 20 years. His repertoire was wider than is often remembered and his recordings give proof of this versatility. He was perhaps most renowned for his Mozart roles, such as Don Ottavio, Ferrando, Tamino and Belmonte. He also sang Jacquino, Cassio, Nurredin, David, Alfredo in Fledermaus and La Traviata, Rodolfo, Lenski, Des Grieux, Flamand in Capriccio, Oedipus in Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex, David, Hans in The Bartered Bride, Narraboth, Leukippos, Hoffmann and Elemer in Arabella. Later he occasionaly ventured into the youthful ...
100 Singers - KARL FRIEDRICHKarl Friedrich, Tenor (1905-1981) Erich Wolfgang Korngold DIE TOTE STADT O Freund, ich werde sie nicht wiedersehen Benno Kusche, Bass-Bariton (1916-2010) Conducted by Fritz Lehmann Recorded 1952 My personal opinion: After the 'Anschluss' in 1938, Richard Tauber left Austria and Franz Lehár lost his favorite tenor during the time of war. He found a replacement in Karl Friedrich, a tenor with a similar timbre. Tauber's voice was small, thin (Baritone Leopold Demuth to the young Tauber: "This is not a voice you have, it's a twine!") and markedly lyric; Friedrich, however, was a genuine lirico-spinto. Perhaps Lehár heard him the first time in 1937 at the Salzburg Festival, where Friedrich sang Adolar in Weber's EURYANTHE. After first engagements in Karlsruhe (1931-1932), Ulm (1932-1933), Stralsund (1933-1934), Magdeburg (1934-1936) and Dusseldorf (1936-1938), Karl Friedrich came to the Vienna State Opera House in 1938 where he sang for many years until 1970. Under the conducting of composer Franz Lehár himself, he recorded his operetta's PAGANINI and GIUDITTA during wartime (Lehà r's position in the 'Third Reich' remains controversial, his jewish wife was classified by Goebbel's as 'Ehrenarierin'). Karl Friedrich also sang the Duke of Urbino ("Komm in die Gondel") in EINE NACHT IN VENEDIG, conducted by Anton Paulik. Guest performances and concerts made him popular in all over Europe, despite the fact, that as an actor on stage "he was stiff and clumsy" (Clemens Hoeslinger). An ...

Herrmann Winkelmann Die Meistersinger Preislied.wmvHermann Winkelmann March 8, 1849 Braunschweig - January 18, 1912 Mauer (Vienna) Winkelmann wanted to become a piano manufacturer like his father. He was sent to Paris to learn his trade. There his voice was discoverd when he was singing in the German Männergesangverein Teutonia. Hugo Wittmann advised him to learn singing. Winkelmann started to learn singing in Paris. He moved to Hannover to continue his study with Maestro Koch. Winkelman made his debut at the Hoftheater in Sondershausen (Thüringen) in 1875 as Manrico. In 1876, he was at the Hoftheater in Altenburg (Thüringen). From1878, he was singing at the Stadttheater in Hamburg. At that time, the house had a very high cutltural level under the management of B. Pollini. There he took part in the world premiere of Rubinstein's Nero on November 1, 1879 with Rosa Sucher, Maria Prochazkova, Franz Krükl, Josef Wolff, with Anton Rubinstein conducting. In 1883, Winkelman sang Jean in the German premiere of Massenet's Hérodiade. Soon he was a renown Wagner tenor. Wagner admired him. As a result, he created Parsifal on July 26, 1882 in Bayreuth. He sang Parsifal in Bayreuth until 1888. He also sang Walther in Bayreuth (1888-89). In 1882, he made guest appearances at the Drury Lane in London with the Hamburg Opera company under Hans Richter. He created there Walther, and Tristan. In Hamburg, he also sang Loge (1878) und Siegfried (Götterdämmerung, 1879). Winkelman remained in Hamburg until 1883. In 1884, he travelled to the USA ...
100 Singers - SEBASTIAN FEIERSINGERSebastian Feiersinger, Tenor (1913-1984) Giuseppe Verdi UN BALLO IN MASCHERA Forse la soglia attinse - Ma se m'e forza perderti (sung in german) Conductor: Alberto Erede Recorded 1955 My personal opinion: A rare abridged version of Verdi's UN BALLO IN MASCHERA with Birgit Nilsson under Alberto Erede brings us two surprises at once: It's in german language (as usual, La Nilsson is hard to understand) and the role of Riccardo is sung by an impressive unknown voice: The austrian tenor Sebastian Feiersinger (* 1913 in Tyrol), whose career has been slowed due to unfortunate circumstances: After two engagements at theaters in Heilbronn and Gablonz in Bohemia, Feiersinger was drafted for military service the first time. After a two year contract with Saarbrücken, military called him a second time. Then he was thirty-two, and it was only after 1945 that he could continue with his singing career (at the Landestheater in Salzburg). After that, he was under contract in Innsbruck (1947-49), Saarbrücken (1949-51), Wiesbaden (1951-53) and Graz (1953-54). Nuremberg would finally become his artistic home for more than twenty years (1954-1975). And because the general public gave him little attention, the great careers were made by others. In the 1950s, Bayreuth was occupied by Treptow, Suthaus, Windgassen and Vinay - Feiersinger tried his luck in San Francisco as TANNHÄUSER (1958) and Aegisth in ELEKTRA - both with great success. If you look at the picture of Sebastian Feiersinger, you ...
