Sammy Davis, Jr. on Late Night: "I Can't Get Started"Probably Sammy Davis, Jr.'s last TV performance. He died of lung cancer about a year later. At the end, he tells Paul Shaffer "No rehearsal. See--better!" This explains the very light touch by the band until the tempo changes--they've never played with this man before, and he's a legend among legends! But when they hit the groove, they all swing. All in all, a very tasty performance. (Imagine being able to just walk onto live TV and pull this off effortlessly! It's mind-boggling....) Sammy's one of my heroes, and while his shtick was sometimes hard to take, there's no debating his prodigious talent, even in that last year of his life.

Backed by a 32-year-old Quincy Jones conducting the Count Basie Orchestra, in this clip Sammy sings while imitating many of the personalities of the time: Fred Astaire, Nat 'King' Cole, Billy Eckstine, Vaughn Monroe, Tony Bennett, Mel Torme, Frankie Laine, Louis Armstrong, Dean Martin (Who was waiting on the wings with Frank Sinatra), and Jerry Lewis. You gotta love it when Sammy (playing Dean) asks, "Which way is the audience, Pally?"

Mr Bojangles Sammy Davis Jr 1989Sammy Davis Jr with what I think is the best performance of Mr Bojangles. I have removed my apology for the 'squiggly subtitles' because it seemed to upset a couple of people who thought I was being disrespectful. It was more to point out my lack of understanding of Japanese writing, rather than to criticise it in any way. I am sorry if it caused offence.

Sammy Davis jr. - Baretta's themeSammy Davis jr. with the theme song of 'Baretta' ...famous police serie of the 70's... Samuel George "Sammy" Davis, Jr. (December 8, 1925 May 16, 1990) was an American entertainer. Primarily a dancer and singer, Davis was a childhood vaudevillian, and became internationally famous for his performances on Broadway and Las Vegas, as a recording artist, television and film star, and the only black member of Frank Sinatra's "Rat Pack". At the age of three Davis began his career in vaudeville with his father and "uncle" as the Will Mastin Trio, toured nationally, and after military service, returned to the trio. Davis became an overnight sensation following a well received nightclub performance at Ciro's after the 1951 Academy Awards, with the trio, became a recording artist, and made his first film performances later that decade. Losing his left eye in a car accident in 1954, he converted to Judaism and appeared in the first Rat Pack movie, "Ocean's Eleven" in 1960. After a starring role on Broadway in 1956's "Mr Wonderful", Davis returned to the stage in 1964's "Golden Boy". Davis's career slowed in the late sixties, but he scored a hit record with "The Candy Man", in 1972, and became a star attraction in Las Vegas. In 1966 he had own TV Variety show called the Sammy Davis Jr. Show.
