Robert Mapplethorpe (Long island, November 4, 1946 - Boston, March 9, 1989) was an American photographer, known for his highly stylized black and white portraits, photos of flowers and naked men. The frank eroticism of some of the work of his middle period triggered a more general controversy about the public funding of artworks. Mapplethorpe was born and grew up as a Roman Catholic of English and Irish heritage in Our Lady of the Snows Parish in Floral Park, Queens, New York. He received a BFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, where he majored in graphic arts. Mapplethorpe took his first photographs soon thereafter using a Polaroid camera. In the mid-1970s, he acquired a Hasselblad medium-format camera and began taking photographs of a wide circle of friends and acquaintances, including artists, composers, and socialites. In the 1980s he refined his aesthetic, photographing statuesque male and female nudes, delicate flower still lifes, and highly formal portraits of artists and celebrities. Mapplethorpe's first studio was at 24 ...
"Robert Having His Nipple Pierced" - Documentary excerptDuring the voice-over for Nigel Finch's excellent documentary on Mapplethorpe (currently available in its entirety at www.ubu.com ), it is claimed that: "In its day, Robert Having His Nipple Pierced achieved some notoriety as an underground classic, and even had the dubious distinction of alerting Andy Warhol to the potential of movie making." However, this date and the resultant claim of the film's influence upon Warhol must be a factual inaccuracy. Most of Warhol's key works were produced before 1968 - Eat (1963), Blowjob (1964) and Chelsea Girls (1967), to name just a few. According to Patricia Morrisroe's absorbing "Mapplethorpe: A Biography", Robert Mapplethorpe and model David Croland met during Memorial day 1970 (Morrisroe, p. 86), the same year in which "Robert Having His Nipple Pierced" was filmed.

This documentary was made a year before his death, and includes various interviews with him, and others close to him. In his 20s, he took up residency with musician Patti Smith. There he spent his time, with Patti Smith as his subject, beginning to perfect his technique by using polaroids, as well as collaborating on several films.

By using rarely seen and little-known images taken by Mapplethorpe, Coppola has created an installation very much in step with her world. Always inspired by images, the director uses photographs to orient the visual concept of her films. She draws inspiration from images pulled from magazines, taken by iconic photographers, and even snapped with her own camera. Whether done consciously or not, from a single glimpse of the photographic ensemble, the viewer could easily imagine the photos to be a mood board for a future film. However, there is no "narrative" that weaves the selection of images together: the viewer has the freedom to invent fictional characters within the nuances of gray. Sofia Coppola extracted gentle images from Robert Mapplethorpe's archive: contemplative moments from which a delicate tension emerges. Known for his erotic and provocative images and the metaphysical nature he often imbues his subject matters with, the viewer is able to ...

Robert Mapplethorpe: PortraitsRobert Mapplethorpe: Portraits will be on view at the San Jose Museum of Art, January 29, 2011 -- June 5, 2011. American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989) captured the essence of the New York cultural scene in the late 1970s and 1980s through his portraits of artists, writers, musicians, designers, dealers, actors, and actresses. Though known to many for his controversial sexual images, Mapplethorpe's most lasting legacy--and the largest portion of his oeuvre--is his striking portraiture. This exhibition includes some one hundred portraits of such noted figures as William Burroughs, Truman Capote, Marianne Faithfull, David Hockney, Grace Jones, Roy Lichtenstein, Brice Marden, Lisette Model, Alice Neel, Iggy Pop, Ed Ruscha, and Andy Warhol. Organized by the Palm Springs Art Museum, California.
