Heartache & Hope - Orphans of Cambodia

Orphans of Cambodia I attended the VII photo workshop in Siem Reap, Cambodia from 18th to 24th November 2007 which was run by photojournalists Gary Knight (VII Photo Agency) and Philip Blenkinsop (Noor Images). The event also coincided with the annual Angkor Photographic Festival which brought in numerous photographers from many different locations. The 16 participants of our workshop had to choose a photo essay assignment and shoot this during the 6 days for a final slideshow presentation at the FCC Hotel on Saturday 24th November. My topic was "Heartache and Hope: Orphans of Cambodia" which highlighted the plight of orphans in Siem Reap living on the street and surviving by scavenging through rubbish or selling postcards and books at the temple sites and the rehabilitation of orphans by the Sunshine Children's Village orphanage. (www.sunrisechildrensvillage.org) I spent every day at the orphanage photographing the children in their daily lives and also spent a number of days photographing orphans on the street and around the temples.

Wind by Christine Her [original]

For the forgotten soldiers, the forgotten people, of a Secret War: For the Hmong. --I wrote this song 4 years ago when my parents told me their stories of how they came to America. For a long time, I struggled with my identity as a Hmong person because I never understood what it meant to be Hmong. When I found out that my people were involved in the Secret War, aka Vietnam War, it helped me to understand a little more of who I am as a Hmong person. If you would like to know more about Hmong people, what they did during the war, and what is happening currently, please feel free to click on the links for more information. Kuch Khaas: Angkor Hangover in Pakistan

Pakistan fared on the Angkor photography canvas in 2007 and since then one Pakistani - no more, and no less - has been the sole ambassador till to date. Incepted by Nashmia Haroon in 2007, the torch was carried by Momin Zafar in 2008, Zeeshan Haider in 2009 and Insiya Syed in 2010. To show you a more complete picture we will also exhibit the work by these Pakistani photojournalists. The Angkor Photography Workshop is held annually in Siem Reap, Cambodia to provide an opportunity for young photographers from Asia to learn techniques, perspectives and universal ethical and professional standards in photography. Since 2005, young Asian photographers mostly inclined to photojournalism and documentary photography have been accepted into the workshop to be mentored by professional photographers who have been producing considerable bodies of work in the international photography scene. ANGKOR HANGOVER will be a gathering of photographers and photography enthusiasts that will highlight slideshow presentations of young photographers who participated in the 5th and 6th Angkor Photography Workshops. Themes of photographic works include children, sickness, art, transportation, night life, homosexuality, labor, child birth, education, garbage, spirituality, physical disability, spaces and love, to name a few. In a broader sense, Angkor Hangover will attempt to engage a more diverse audience and promote documentary photography as a medium for storytelling. Photo essays/stories: 5th ...
