Ce livre regroupe ses 82 derniers tableaux et les met en regard avec les lettres, souvent illustrées, qu'il a écrit à son frère Théo et à ses amis. Vincent se tire une balle dans la poitrine dans un champ de blé d'Auvers-sur-Oise et meurt à l'auberge Ravoux le 29 juillet.
