Nan Goldin I'll Be Your Mirror Documentary Part OneI put a WARNING on this if you aren't aware of her work, Nan has featured in photography books such as 'Vile Bodies' which the title basically explains itself. There are images and discussions of drug use, nudity, extreme illness and at times upsetting images of people who have passed away. Nancy "Nan" Goldin (born, 1953, Washington, DC) is an American photographer. en.wikipedia.org Some critics have accused her of making heroin-use appear glamorous, and of pioneering a grunge style that later became popularized by youth fashion magazines such as The Face and ID. However, in a 2002 interview with The Observer, Goldin herself called the use of "heroin chic" to sell clothes and perfumes "reprehensible and evil. Anyone who already knows about the work of Nan Goldin will know that she is far from glamorizing, and that her work is as near to complete truth as art and explorations in art can get. In a lot of ways Nan is saying that the people that were around her were just living their lives, like everyone else, and had experiences like everyone else apart from or until the appearance of what later became known as Hiv and Aids that changed each of their lives irreparably. The Ballad of Sexual Dependency - Nan Goldin and The Tiger Lilies (Arles Festival 2009)*We do not own this video, it's simply here for promotion only. All rights belong to their respective owners, no infringement is intended. More info here: www.rencontres-arles.com A quote from Nan Goldin on The Ballad of Sexual Dependency: "For almost three decades Ive travelled throughout the world projecting many different versions of The Ballad of Sexual Dependancy, from downtown clubs to cinemas and finally to museums. What started as a home movie has expanded through dozens of audiences reactions. Ive collected all kinds of music - much of it as gifts - in the same way Ive collected images. Ive edited dozens of versions of the soundtrack, which has functioned as my narrative voice, the lyrics often explaining my attitude toward images, from irony to tenderness. This will be the second time, after the Tate Modern Live Performance in 2008, that Im collaborating with musicians who have created their own original score in relation to the slideshows." Nan Goldin - In My Life (excerpt, ART/new york no. 47)This program features Nan Goldin's celebrated 1996 mid-career photography retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Goldin's exhibition filled an entire floor at the Whitney Museum with pictures that chronicle her involvement and fascination with the alternative, "downtown" culture of New York City, Boston, Berlin, Tokyo, etc. Culled from a period that spans more than 25 years of taking pictures, Goldin's desire to make a visual diary of her friends and lovers, as well as her own life, makes for a moving, highly charged, visual experience. This exhibition was organized by curator ELIZABETH SUSSMAN and selected by NAN GOLDIN and her life long friend and colleague DAVID ARMSTRONG. Included are interviews with NAN GOLDIN and MARVIN HEIFERMAN, a curator/publisher and a director of Lookout in New York City. 28 min.
