Marina Abramović - How we in the Balkans kill rats

From "The Star" movie (1999). This video was a piece of "Balkan Baroque" installation in the Venice Biennale 1997, that was Marina Abramović awared the Gold Lion Award. "I´ d like to tell you a story of how we in the Balkans kill rats. We have a method of transforming the rat into a wolf; we make a wolf rat. But before I explain this method I´ d like to tell you something about rats themselves. First of all, rats consume large quantities of food, sometimes double the weight of their own bodies. Their front teeth never stop growing and they have to be ground constantly otherwise they risk suffocation. Rats take good care of their families. They will never kill or eat the members of their own family. They are extremely intelligent. Einstein once said: "If the rat were 20 kilos heavier it would definitely be the ruler of the world". If you put a plate of food and poison in front of a hole the rat will sense it and not eat. To catch the rats you have to fill all their holes with water, leaving only one open. In this way you can catch 35 to 45 rats. You have to make sure that you choose only the males. You put them in a cage and give them only water to drink. After a while they start to get hungry, their front teeth start growing and even though, normally, they would not kill members of their own tribe, since they risk suffocation they are forced to kill the weak one in the cage. And then another weak one, another weak one, and another weak one. They go on until only the ...

Relation in Time. Marina Abramović and Ulay

Marina Abramović was born in 1946 in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. Since the beginning of her career, during the early 1970s where she attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade, Abramović has pioneered the use of performance as a visual art form. The body has been both her subject and medium. Exploring the physical and mental limits of her being, she has withstood pain, exhaustion and danger in the quest for emotional and spiritual transformation. As a vital member of the generation of pioneering performance artists that includes Bruce Nauman, Vito Acconci and Chris Burden, Abramović created some of the most historic early performance pieces and continues to make important durational works. Abramović has presented her work with performances, sound, photography, video, sculpture and Transitory Objects for Human and Non Human Use in solo exhibitions at major institutions in the US and Europe. Her work has also been included in many large-scale international exhibitions including the Venice Biennale (1976 and 1997) and Documenta VI, VII and IX, Kassel, Germany (1977, 1982 and 1992). In 1998, the exhibition Artist Body - Public Body toured extensively, including stops at Kunstmuseum and Grosse Halle, Bern and La Gallera, Valencia. In 2004, Abramović also exhibited at the Whitney Biennial in New York and had a significant solo show, The Star, at the Maruame Museum of Contemporary Art and the Kumamoto Museum of Contemporary Art, Japan. Abramović has taught and lectured extensively ...

The Other: "Rest Energy", 1980

Ulay and Abramovic said of the series 'That Self': 'Our interest is relation. With our "Relation work" we cause a third existence, which carries "Vital Energy". This third energy existence conjured by us does not depend on us any longer, but has its own quality which we call That Self. Three as a number means nothing else but "That Self".' 'That Self' (1980) actually includes various components, which can also function as separate works. The work opens with three monochrome colour fields - red, blue and yellow - that remain on the screen for some time. This is accompanied by a sustained tone, which now and then becomes slightly higher. After this non-figurative opening, 'That Self' continues with four performances, especially executed for the purpose of this film. The common starting point of these separate components is hypnosis. Ulay and Abramovic said: 'We had training in hypnosis. Our aims were to search and explore the subconscious. We chose to realize three colour fields and four visions which were described by us under that treatment. The four visions were translated into performances for film.' These performances are not about extending limits by means of physical exhaustion, but rather, about the power of concentration. In 'Point of Contact' (January/August 1980, film studio, Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and summer 1980, Dublin, Ireland), Ulay and Abramovic, both dressed in black trousers and jacket, with a white shirt underneath, stand face-to-face. They look ...

Marina Abramovic Interviewed for "The Artist is Present" at the Celebs.com Studio at Sundance

The world's best/most successful/most famous/most significant performance artist Marina Abramovic, and Matthew Akers, the director of the documentary "Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present," chatted with Celebs.com's Elliot Kotek at the Celebs.com Studio at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. The film chronicles the lead-up to Abramovic's major retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the institution's first such exhibition for a performance artist. Interesting, also, how Marina's exhibition was given momentum in a new demographic by Lady Gaga's seeing and telling people about her show. Later that night, Abramovic hosted a "silent party" at Sundance - undoubtedly another first.
