Lillian BassmanLillian Bassman, Photograoher Music by Gotan Project
Lillian BassmanLillian Bassman introduced a more sophisticated, new aesthetic to photography, with elegant, moody and often abstract images. Bassman's experimental and romantic visions revolutionized fashion photography. Vanity Fair singled her out as one of photography's "grand masters." Lillian Bassman's unique images are elegant and graceful and achieve their effect through darkroom manipulation, specifically by blurring and bleaching areas of the photographs.

Artists Obituary February 2012A slideshow of a selection of the work of painters, sculptors and photographers who passed away during the month of February. Kind of like a pictorial obituary with art. Watch in HD! Music is from Ariel Ramirez's 'Misa Criolla'. A snapshot of the talent the earth typically loses in a month. The irony is that, speaking for myself, the only time I ever hear of most of these semi-obscure artists is after they've died and their legacy becomes apparent. en.wikipedia.org Fernando Lanhas Yasuhiro Ishimoto Antoni Tàpies Sergio Larraín Theophilus Brown Chuck Baird Lillian Bassman Matt Lamb József Breznay Sarbari Roy Choudhury Enzo Sellerio Rémi Ochlik Robert R. Vogue 6Lillian Bassman (June 15, 1917 in Brooklyn) is an American painter and photographer. Her parents were Jewish intellectuals who emigrated from Russia to the United States in 1905 and settled in Brooklyn, New York. She studied at the Textile High School, with Alexey Brodovitch, inManhattan and graduated in 1933. While there, she met the photographer Paul Himmel and they married in 1935. From the 1940s until the 1960s, Bassman worked as a fashion photographer for Junior Bazaar and later at Harper's Bazaar, where she promoted the careers of photographers such as Richard Avedon, Robert Frank, Louis Faurer and Arnold Newman. Under the guidance of the Russian emigrant Alexey Brodovitch, she began to photograph her model subjects primarily in black and white. Her work was published for the most part in Harper's Bazaar, between 1950-1965. By the 1970s, Bassman's interest in pure form in her fashion photography was out of vogue. She turned to her own photo projects and abandoned fashion photography. In doing so, she tossed out 40 years of negatives and prints - her life's work. Over 20 years later, a forgotten bag filled with hundreds of images was discovered. Bassman's fashion photographic work began to be re-appreciated in the 1990s. Presently in her 90s, she is now working with digital technology and abstract color photography to create a new series of work. She now uses Photoshop for her image manipulation. The most notable qualities about her photographic work are the high ...

Joanna Mastroianni Fall 2012 CollectionFor Fall 2012, Joanna Mastroianni goes on a journey—with Iris Apfel. The fashion icon and her stunning personal style, incorporating the finest couture in her own unique way, inspired Mastroianni to imagine the ultimate fashionista and what she might wear in her favorite haunts around the world. The collection is filled with Mastroianni's artistry at every turn. There is a wealth of detail, all exquisitely executed by hand, all inventive, all one-of-a-kind. Fabrics that appears to be tufted were actually created by shirring, shredding and cutting silk organza into tiny strips, then embroidered with caviar beads onto sheer organza backing. Faceted chunks of metal were covered with black leather, surrounded by more shirred organza and caviar beads, the leather giving the extensive ornamentation a modern cutting edge. It's all a marvelous display of Mastroianni's masterful ability to create a collection of breathtaking beauty and unrivalled imagination, combined with an atelier capable of superb craftsmanship and exhaustive hand-work. It distinquishes the very height of fashion, and defines the essence of Joanna Mastroianni. Let the journey begin...
