Baltz graduated from San Francisco Art Institute in 1969 and holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Claremont Graduate School. He received several scholarships and awards including a scholarship from the National Endowment For the Arts (1973, 1977), the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship (1977), US-UK Bicentennial Exchange Fellowship (1980), and Charles Brett Memorial Award (1991). In 2002 Lewis Baltz became a Professor for Photography at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee. Baltz is now living in Paris and Venezia. His entire work is focused on the counter-aesthetic of photography, searching beauty in desolation and destruction. Baltz images describe the architecture of the human landscape, offices, factories, and parking lots. His pictures are the reflection of control, power, and influenced by and over human beings. His minimalistic photographs in the trilogy Ronde de Nuit, Docile Bodies, and Politics of Bacteria, picture the void of the other, in 1974 he captured the anonymity ...

Vittore Fossati a MIcameraLinea di Confine per la Fotografia Contemporanea con William Guerrieri, Vittore Fossati, Marco Signorini lunedì 24 novembre a MIcamera Milano Linea di Confine è un progetto che ha sede a Rubiera (Reggio Emilia), coordina e realizza indagini fotografiche cercando di comprendere le trasformazioni territoriali in atto e coinvolgendo operatori culturali, artisti, fotografi di fama riconosciuta (tra cui Stephen Shore, Lewis Baltz, John Gossage, Guido Guidi, Walter Niedermayr, Paola De Pietri) o individuando giovani autori emergenti, grazie al sostegno soprattutto di alcune amministrazioni pubbliche. Dal 1989 ad oggi ha pubblicato una trentina di cataloghi e promosso una serie di indagini fotografiche, lultima delle quali è appunto dedicata alla linea veloce Milano-Bologna. A parlarci di questa realtà, accompagnati dalla proiezione delle immagini, William Guerrieri - autore, coordinatore del progetto e membro del comitato scientifico, Vittore Fossati, autore del recente In riva ai fiumi / Vicino ai ponti (Collana Linea Veloce Milano-Bologna) e Marco Signorini, autore che collabora con il progetto.

Seventies. Le choc de la photographie américaineEn 1971 la Bibliothèque Nationale présenta, sous le titre Photographie nouvelle des États-Unis, une exposition consacrée à de jeunes Américains alors peu connus. Leurs photographies rompaient avec la conception du médium qui prévalait en Europe, où régnait la photographie « humaniste ». On découvrit alors Diane Arbus, Lee Friedlander, Garry Winogrand, et bien d'autres. Chacun à sa manière engageait une singulière évolution, interrogeait sans a priori les multiples possibilités de cet art. Loin du pictorialisme, à distance du pur document, ils ne rompaient pourtant pas avec la riche tradition que représentaient Walker Evans, Harry Callahan ou Aaron Siskind. La collection de la BnF conserve, grâce à ce lien consolidé au fil des ans, plus de deux mille tirages d'époque. L'exposition n'entend pas pour autant tracer une histoire de la photographie américaine des années 1970. Les quelque trois cents photographies, rassemblées autour d'un nombre restreint de thèmes esquissent un parcours dans le territoire iconographique qu'elles constituent, un travelling dans cette partie de notre collection. Le portrait (Diane Arbus), le paysage (Paul Caponigro, Lewis Baltz ou Joe Deal), les expérimentations photographiques (Duane Michals ou Les Krims) font écho dans l'exposition aux scènes de rue de Garry Winogrand, William Klein, Bruce Gilden, aux héros marginaux de Larry Clark, à l'humour décalé de Bill Owens et Ken Graves, aux recherches raffinées de Ralph Gibson. Depuis dix ans, Antoine d'Agata, de nuit de préférence, parcourt le monde profitant de ses déambulations pour nous dépeindre un univers sombre et torturé très loin du reportage. Dorénavant il nous fait pénétrer dans l'univers décalé de son propre vécu, faisant de nous des spectateurs mal à l'aise.
