ai.eecs.umich.edu ai.eecs.umich.edu www.tsroadmap.com Transcript Staying Sane 365Gay News Logo Originally aired 26 February 2009 Ross Palombo: A transgender university professor targeted she says for speaking out, and her fight against a prominent psychiatrist may help others keep their sanity. Chagmion Antoine has that story from New York. Chagmion. Chagmion Antoine: Ross, even though homosexuality was removed from the American Psychiatric Associations list of mental illnesses back in 1973, people who are transgender are still diagnosed with gender identity disorder today. And one professor at U. Michigan says thats crazy talk. Chagmion Antoine (voiceover): Lynn Conway has been fighting for the rights of transgender people ever since her own experience cost her her job in the 1960s. Now shes a professor emeritus at the University of Michigan, and her website lynnconway.com is a respected resource for trans people all around the world. So why is she being sued for libel by one of the worlds leading researchers on gender identity? Professor Lynn Conway: This isnt between Dr. Zucker and Professor Lynn Conway, this is between Dr. Zucker and the entire transgender community. Chagmion Antoine (voiceover): Dr. Kenneth Zucker, a Toronto-based sexologist, spent his career diagnosing children with gender identity issues as mentally ill. When he was appointed to the APA as an authority on gender identity disorders last year, Conway sounded the alarm. Professor Lynn Conway: Dr ...

A RED, RED ROSE by Robert Burns, sung by Andy M. Stewart

It's one of the Bard of Scotland's great poems, sung by Andy M. Stewart with Gerry Butler as Rabbie Burns. 18th and 19th century Scottish paintings and etchings were adapted as the background, and a number of actresses portray Burns' wife and many loves. One can only hope that the movie about the life of Robert Burns will one day be made. If anyone can do it, Gerry Butler is the man.

Vintage Car Safety Film: Anatomy of an Accident (1960s)

thefilmarchive.org DVD: www.amazon.com Automobile safety is the study and practice of vehicle design, construction, and equipment to minimize the occurrence and consequences of automobile accidents. (Road traffic safety more broadly includes roadway design. One of the first formal academic studies into improving car safety was by Cornell Aeronautical Labs of Buffalo, New York. The main conclusion of their extensive report is the crucial importance of seat belts and padded dashboards. Improvements in roadway and automobile designs have steadily reduced injury and death rates in all first world countries. Nevertheless, auto collisions are the leading cause of injury-related deaths, an estimated total of 1.2 million in 2004, or 25% of the total from all causes. Risk compensation limits the improvement that can be made, often leading to reduced safety where one might expect the opposite. When pregnant, women should continue to use seatbelts and airbags properly. A University of Michigan study found that "unrestrained or improperly restrained pregnant women are 5.7 times more likely to have an adverse fetal outcome than properly restrained pregnant women". If seatbelts are not long enough, extensions are available from the car manufacturer or an aftermarket supplier. Children present significant challenges in engineering and producing safe vehicles, because most children are significantly smaller and lighter than most adults. Safety devices and systems designed and optimised ...

Jayne Mansfield & Phyllis Diller in The Fat Spy: Beach Party Film (1966 Z Movie)

DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchived.blogspot.com Jayne Mansfield (April 19, 1933 -- June 29, 1967) was an American actress working both on Broadway and in Hollywood. One of the leading blonde sex symbols of the 1950s, Mansfield starred in several popular Hollywood films that emphasized her platinum-blonde hair, hourglass figure and cleavage-revealing costumes. While Mansfield's film career was short-lived, she had several box office successes. She won the Theatre World Award, a Golden Globe and a Golden Laurel. As the demand for blonde bombshells declined in the 1960s, Mansfield was relegated to low-budget film melodramas and comedies, but remained a popular celebrity. In her later career she continued to attract large crowds in foreign countries and in lucrative and successful nightclub tours. Mansfield had been a Playboy Playmate of the Month and appeared in the magazine several additional times. She died in an automobile accident at age 34. In 1955, she enjoyed a successful Broadway run acting in Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?. This wild comedy starred Mansfield as Rita Marlowe, a wild blonde Hollywood actress. The play also starred Orson Bean and Walter Matthau. Returning to Hollywood on May 3, 1956, Mansfield signed a six-year contract with 20th Century Fox. Fox had plans to mold Jayne as a Marilyn Monroe second, to threaten Monroe when she got out of line. The studio capitalized Jayne as, "Marilyn Monroe King Sized". Jayne was then given her first starring role as ...

Robbie Burns "The Silver Tassie"

This little posting is my contribution to the Immortal Memory of Robert Burns, commemorating his birth on the 25th of January in 1759. Humourist, satirist, poet and humanist, may his message of hope, fellowship and compassion never be forgotten. The track I've entitled, The Silver Tassie, has actually several names, depending on where you look. For example, The Fontana /Collins Edition, pub, 1983, of the Poems and Songs of Robert Burns, titles it "The Silver Tassie", to the tune of The Secret Kiss. However, The Complete Poetical Works of Robert Burns, Edinburgh, Ed. John S. Roberts, William P. Nimmo pub.1866, calls it "My Bonny Mary," with a note to the effect that the 1st four lines are from an old ballad composed in 1636 by Alexander Lesly. The following URL, www.robertburns.org a wonderful Robbie Burns resource site, lists the title as "My Bonie Mary". Linn records CKD 051, The Complete Songs of Robert Burns vol 2 of a 12 volume set, lists the song as The Silver Tassie, performed by Billy Ross. Pub 1996. Yet Kenneth McKeller's album, "To Robert Burns, A Tribute," calls the song, "Gae bring to me a pint o' wine." Lismor Recordings, 1993. I've also seen that same title for the poem itself in one compilation, which I cannot track down right now. Though no less moving than anything else Robert Burns compiled or wrote, this is one of his lesser known works. I shudder to think what kind of history something like "Auld lang syne" or "Ode to a Mouse" might have gone through. I ...

Remembering Kenny Linn

Our dear friend Kenny Linn died from pancreatic cancer on May 28, 2009. We only knew Kenny for 12 years but he was one of my few, real friends. He will be missed by me and Jo & probably all of you that are watching this. We went to Grand Turk in 2005 with Sandy and him and had a great time. He told me that Grand Turk was where he wanted to die and it's unfortunate that he was unable to have his wish. I think everyone was surprised by his illness and ultimate death but he went so quickly. He loved music and good beers (and wines) and I'm glad he got to see my band The Pundits reunion show before he died. He told me that it was the best I'd ever sounded and coming from him that meant a compliment of the highest order. Kenny Linn knew music! Search Facebook for his rememberance page Sandy posted. Roswell Incident: US Government Explanation - Documentary Film (1997)

thefilmarchive.org DVD: www.amazon.com The two Air Force reports on the Roswell UFO incident, published in 1994/5 and 1997, form the basis for much of the skeptical explanation for the 1947 incident, the purported recovery of aliens and their craft from the vicinity of Roswell, New Mexico. The first report, "The Roswell Report: Fact versus Fiction in the New Mexico Desert," identified a secret military research program called Project Mogul as the source of the debris reported in 1947. The second report, "The Roswell Report: Case Closed" concluded that reports of alien recoveries were likely misidentified military programs or accidents. By the mid-1990s, the Roswell UFO incident, the alleged crash and recovery of aliens and their spacecraft near Roswell, New Mexico, USA in 1947 had generated a mini-industry, with numerous books suggesting an alien cover-up and Roswell itself transformed into a popular tourist destination centered on UFO-related attractions. Polls, like a 1997 CNN/Time poll, suggested that a strong majority of Americans believed that the government was hiding evidence of the existence of aliens, and specifically, that the Roswell incident involved the recovery of aliens. In that context, many were demanding answers from their government on what really happened at Roswell in 1947, so in January 1994, Congressman Steven Schiff requested that the United States Congress' investigative branch, the General Accounting Office (GAO), look into the matter. The next ...

J Patrick O'Connor: Civil Rights Investigation for Mumia Abu-Jamal

Interviewed in July, 2009, J. Patrick O'Connor is the author of the 2008 book 'The Framing of Mumia Abu-Jamal' which has been completely ignored by the mainstream media in Philadelphia, despite a New York Times article released on the day of the book's release. In this new interview O'Connor argues for a federal civil rights investigation into Abu-Jamal's case, on grounds that the DA withheld the fact that a license application was found in Officer Daniel Faulkner's front shirt pocket. On April 6, 2009, the US Supreme Court refused to consider an appeal from death-row journalist and former Black Panther Mumia Abu-Jamal, who was convicted of first-degree murder in the shooting death of white Philadelphia Police Officer Daniel Faulkner in a 1982 trial deemed unfair by Amnesty International, the European Parliament, the Japanese Diet, Nelson Mandela and numerous others. Citing the Supreme Court denial and several instances of withheld evidence, Abu-Jamals international support network is now calling for a federal civil rights investigation into Abu-Jamals case. The facts of the Abu-Jamal/Faulkner case are highly contested, but all sides agree on certain key points: Abu-Jamal was moonlighting as a taxi-driver on Dec. 9, 1981, when, shortly before 4 am, he saw his brother, William Billy Cook, in an altercation with Officer Faulkner after Faulkner had pulled over Cooks car at the corner of 13th and Locust streets, downtown Philadelphia. Abu-Jamal approached the scene. Minutes ...
