Leica & Magnum: Past Present FutureA core principle which framed the establishment of Magnum Photos in1947 was the belief that photographers should have a point of view in their imagery that transcended any formulaic recording of contemporary events. This tradition continues today with the new series of photographic essays being produced by Magnum and Leica. Burning curiosity breeds evocative expression and it is precisely this spirit which Magnum and Leica will be supporting through this new agreement to create and publish new multimedia essays that will take a deeper look into the stories behind the photographs. The stories will cover new works by Magnum photographers addressing contemporary themes as well as investigations into the archives of photographers career-long obsessions to share Magnum photographer's individual journeys and unique ways of storytelling. The voice on this movie is that of Alice George, former head of Magnum. New stories will be presented on online at www..leica-camera.com, http and inmotion.magnumphotos.com
Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller ♥On June 29, 1956, Monroe married playwright Arthur Miller, whom she first met in 1950, in a civil ceremony in White Plains, New York. The wedding had been kept secret from both the press and the public. In reflecting on his courtship of Monroe, Miller wrote, "She was a whirling light to me then, all paradox and enticing mystery, street-tough one moment, then lifted by a lyrical and poetic sensitivity that few retain past early adolescence." Raised as a Christian, she converted to Judaism before marrying Miller. After she finished shooting The Prince and the Showgirl with Laurence Olivier, the couple returned to the United States from England and discovered she was pregnant. Miller's screenplay for The Misfits, a story about a despairing divorcée, was meant to be a Valentine gift for his wife, but by the time filming started in 1960 their marriage was beyond repair. A Mexican divorce was granted on January 24, 1961. On February 17, 1962, Miller married Inge Morath, one of the Magnum photographers recording the making of The Misfits. ~I Own Nothing~ song used: Somewhere Over The Rainbow

Now, woman, you are the forgiveness, and as it lives in you, the divine Thought will flourish in secrecy surrounded by your grace. The Price of SexAn unprecedented and compelling inquiry, THE PRICE OF SEX sheds light on the underground criminal network of human trafficking and experiences of trafficked Eastern European women forced into prostitution abroad. Photojournalist Mimi Chakarova's feature documentary caps years of painstaking, on-the-ground reporting that aired on Frontline (PBS) and 60 Minutes (CBS) and earned her an Emmy nomination, Magnum photo agency's Inge Morath Award, and a Webby for Internet excellence. Filming under cover with extraordinary access, even posing as a prostitute to gather her material, Bulgarian-born Chakarova travels from impoverished rural areas in post-Communist Eastern Europe, including her grandmother's village, to Turkey, Greece, and Dubai. This dangerous investigative journey brings Chakarova face to face with trafficked women willing to trust her and appear on film undisguised. Their harrowing first-person accounts, as well as interviews with traffickers, clients, and anti-trafficking activists, expose the root causes, complex connections, and stark significance of sexual slavery today.
See Potential by Emily Schiffer (Archive)Emily Schiffer is raising funds for her photography project See Potential. In order to receive contributions, this project must be funded in full by 1/18/12. To help: www.kickstarter.com From Emily: SEE POTENTIAL will address one of the South Side of Chicago's most pressing issues: the absence of affordable, healthy foods. In partnership with Orrin Williams, the founder and director of the Center for Urban Transformation (CUT) [www.cutchicago.org I will use community engagement and public art as a platform for transforming urban blight into community potential. We will work with other artists, photographers, and community leaders to use large-scale photographic installations and urban redevelopment as strategies for pre-visualizing a transformed landscape. We hope to mobilize the community and redirect attention towards simple, holistic solutions that positively reframe individuals' relationships with food and foster new forms of healthy living. We will complete this project in the following three stages: #1 SEE POTENTIAL Work with community leaders to locate blighted buildings, abandoned factories, and unoccupied storefronts that could be transformed into healthy corner stores, urban gardens, year-round indoor growing sites, and community centers. #2 VISUALIZE CHANGE Transform urban blight into photographic artworks that enable community members to imagine shared community spaces such as: - Locally owned corner stores that will sell nutritious food and provide on-site ...
