The Omo People

These images arrived in a PDF from someone in Belgium. These are probably Mursi and Suri. The Omo River empties into Lake Turkana. Lately, it's been spoiled by too many tourists, probably lured there by images like these. Sigh....

Afroamerindios Channel - The Omo People

The wonderful people of the Omo Valley (Ethiopia) . DOES HELPING THEM MEAN MARKING OFF THEIR TERRITORY? ..dressing them, teaching them to write,to build cities,or long-distance adoption of their children? Are we sure that having them emulate our society, which is fast heading for self destruction,is really in their best interest? Wouldn't it be better to let them decide what's best for them, seeing that their traditional systems have protected them unaltered for thousands of years?. www.sangredeamerica.org / photography project by : Hans .Silvester

Painting Leap Frog Jac - Art by TET

'Leap Frog Jac' features 'Jac the Cat' making a some what wild attempt at catching a very quick frog. Inspired by an image from Hans Silvester's book 'Cats in the Sun' I talk about the creation of the artwork and how I reached a compromise between planned composition and the spontaneity of just starting to paint.

Angelique Kidjo - Afirika (Audio)

From the CD: Black Ivory Soul "Open your eyes, ears and hearts and surrender to the sights and sounds of Africa." Great song from a great African woman, set to the pictures of a great African civilization - The people of the Surma and Mursi tribes. Tribal Decoration of the Omo Valley - Pictures by: Hans Silvester (Africa on Lens) The people of the Surma and Mursi tribes live in the Omo Valley of Southern Ethiopia are body painters: they paint their bodies with pigments made from the earth as an immemorial and quotidian practice mothers paint babies, children and adults paint themselves and each other in a tradition that seems unchanged for thousands of years. Their paintings range from abstract designs of circles, lines, dots and swirls, sometimes focused on specific body parts, to all-over patterns of flowers, zig-zags and fingerprints that form a dazzling array on the entire body. White, yellow, orange and ochre; the natural pigments that they use are derived from the soil and rocks of their surroundings. The tribes daily paintings are an essential expression of their lives more elemental to them than music or dance. Fascinated by the Surma and Mursi tribes painting practices and astounded by the beauty of their ephemeral art. Silvester captures the diverse and extraordinary effects that they achieve through their ancient tradition. Source Malborough Gallery

The Omo River People

The Omo River is an important river of southern Ethiopia. Its course is entirely contained within the boundaries of Ethiopia, and empties into Lake Turkana on the border with Kenya. It is the principal stream of an endorheic drainage basin; the part that the Omo drains includes part of the western Oromia Region and the middle of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People's Region. There in the confines of Ethiopia, centuries away from modernity, Hans Sylvester photographed during six years the tribes where men, women, children, old people, are geniuses of an ancient art, body painting. The region provides a vast range of pigments, red ochre, white kaolin, copper green, yellow or light gray ash. The Omo Tribes are genius of body painting, and their bodies of two meters high is a huge canvas. The strength of their art lies in three words: fingers, speed and freedom. They draw open hands, the tip of nails, sometimes with a piece of wood, a reed, a crushed stem. The lively gestures, rapid, spontaneous, beyond childhood, this essential movement that major contemporary masters seek when they learned a lot and try to forget everything. Body Painting, only the desire to decorate, to seduce, to be beautiful, a game and a permanent pleasure. The Omo Tribe in Africa just have to plunge their fingers into the clay and, in two minutes, on the chest, breasts, pubic area, legs, is born nothing less than a Miro, Picasso, Pollock, a Tàpies, a Klee
