Hans Aarsmans talk at TEDxAmsterdam was titled From pretty to ugly and back again; mysterious ways of beauty in photography and the audience judged it one of the highlights of the day. Surprising, insightful and at times hilarious, Aarsman shows different concepts of beauty in photography, and suggests that the only real photographic beauty is to be found in pictures that were made without such a goal in mind. Hans Aarsman is a former photographer, who worked as a photo journalist at a Dutch newspaper and published a series of books. In 1989 he published the book Hollandse Taferelen (Dutch scenes). He published three more photo books before he left photography. Vrijdag 12 augustus 2011: Hans Aarsman. Hans Aarsman was aanvankelijk fotojournalist onder andere voor het dagblad Trouw. In 1989 publiceerde hij het boek Hollandse Taferelen, landschappen gefotografeerd vanaf het dak van zijn camper waarmee hij een jaar door Nederland trok. Daarna maakte hij in 1993 het fotoboek Aarsmans Amsterdam en Een engeltje dat over mijn tong piest in 1995. In 2003 verscheen zijn autofotografie-boek Vrrooom! Vrrooomm! Het Nederlands Fotomuseum heeft enkele collecties van Aarsman aangekocht. Sinds 2 mei 2006 is een deel van deze collectie voor particulieren gratis te downloaden voor afdrukken op A3-formaat. Aarsman kreeg in 1993 de Maria Austria-Prijs. Sinds de jaren negentig manifesteert Hans Aarsman zichzelf vooral als schrijver met een grote interesse voor foto's die niet vanuit artistiek oogpunt gemaakt zijn. Hij schrijft, oa de wekelijkse column 'de Aarsman collectie' in de Volkskrant waarin hij op zoek gaat naar het ware verhaal achter nieuwsfoto's. in 2009 stelde hij de tentoonstelling Off the Record (2009) samen voor het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.

Together with guest speakers, bloggers and artists Foam Lab will give a new spin on this exhibition. The exhibition 'Antiphotojournalism' is about changes in photojournalism today. A photojournalist is no longer only a professional armed with a press card and a telephoto lens, travelling with the news. Nowadays the civilian with a smartphone and an internet connection is almost as important. Foam Lab is looking at the exhibition, and photojournalism in general, in a fresh new way. Nature as Artifice: New Dutch Landscape in Photography and Video Art, curated by Maartje van den Heuvel, is a major survey of new work by contemporary Dutch artists who, over the past twenty years, have taken contemporary Holland as their point of departure. Rob Hamelijnck and Nienke Terpsma, the artists and editors of Rotterdam-based magazine Fucking Good Art (www.fuckinggoodart.nl) were embedded on Maasvlakte for a month during AugustSeptember 2009 from where they produced 'Portscapes_ON AIR Station' Maasvlakte. Comprising a series of audio walks, field recordings and conversations with guests from different disciplines Portscapes_ON AIR Station Maasvlakte was broadcast on Portscapes' website (www.portscapes.nl). Inspired by their camps proximity to the pipeline which carries sand from the Yangtzehaven to the future Maasvlakte 2, the editors of FGA approached their endeavour both as inhabitants of an industrial and man-made territory and in relation to the redistribution and displacement of knowledge. Alongside other grand movements of transportation and trade taking place in the port, FGAs broadcasts took shape through encounters with others and considered the role that art and artists have in other registers of exchange. Starting from the principal that in order to really understand a place one needs to really inhabit it, and the question of how to represent a place like Maasvlakte 2 which does not yet fully exist, the editors of FGA also aimed to stimulate discussion about the representation of Dutch landscape. They hope that their project can be a pilot for a further research residencies.
