VISIT SCOTLAND VOL 1: Glen Coe, Scottish Highlands: HD Photo MontageGlen Coe is one of the most spectacular and beautiful places in Scotland, once visited never forgotten. Its best accessed from the east via the A82 in which you take in a spectacular drive through Rannoch Moor which covers 50 sq miles of land. Rannoch Moor is beautifully barren and perfectly sums up the words "Lonely Planet" with endless views of open spaces in every direction and just a single winding road , however Rannoch Moor can also be as equally trecherous when the weather sets in and not a place to be waiting for AA assistance. When you reach Glen Coe you are met by an elevated view over the Glen with the famous three steeply-sided ridges known as "The Three Sisters" lying to the west. "The Three Sisters" form part of "Bidean nam Bian", which is the highest point in the former county of Argyll and a complex mountain with many ridges and subsidiary peaks. There is an undoubtably haunting and eerie feel about Glen Coe which is psychologically enhanced if you research the history of the area prior to visiting, but whats also very unforgettable is just how quiet and peaceful it is. Its a place you will want to stop at and take in the views, transgress or maybe go for a walk for no particular reason to no particular place. As you stand shadowed by "The Three Sisters", its easy to visualise what happened there during the early hours of February 3rd 1692. Glen Coe is formed from an ice age glacier, it is 10 miles in length but just 700 metres in width, at approximately ...
The Fairy Glen Rosemarkie ScotlandA day in the fairy Glen Fairy Glen is an area of broadleaved woodland set in an attractive steep-sided valley, with the Markie Burn running through it. It is managed by the RSBP and local landowners. The glen gets its name from an old tradition. Every Sunday, the children of the village would gather in the glen, at the site of a spring. They would tidy up the pool area around the spring and sprinkle flower petals on it as a gift to the fairies. The fairies in return would ensure a good clean supply of water for the village. The glen is heavily wooded with birches, geans and rowans and is a haven for plants and wildlife. Depending on the time of year you are likely to see primroses, bluebells, water avens, wood sorrel and red campion. You might spot willow warblers, buzzards, treecreepers, wrens, sparrowhawks, dippers and grey wagtails. The millpond dates back at least 200 years. At the turn of the 19th century, when salmon fishing was a thriving local industry, ice would be cut from the pond in winter and transported to local 'ice-houses' to preserve the fish. Around the pond today you might see mallards, grey herons, frogs, newts and dragonflies. Also of geographical interest on the southern side of the glen in the area known as 'The Dens', are a series of earth pillars, formed by water erosion. Such pillars can be seen in other parts of Europe but are rare in Britain. Find the wishing Tree and sit by the two waterfalls stunning and relaxing
Laggan Stores - A Shop with a DifferenceLaggan Stores was featured in the Scottish drama series 'Monarch of the Glen' as McKechnies shop. However its most important role is the service and support it provides to the remote Highland community around the village of Laggan, in Invernesshire, Scotland. The owners Jo and Ian took over the shop in 2003 because they thought it was important for the community. Now close to retiral, the couple want the shop to continue as a going concern rather than a holiday home. This little video gives an insight into how the shop is run and how important such shops are to local communities and businesses.

Scotland - Monarch of the Glen - UKMay 2002 Stalking the Highland hills, Sir John Nutting QC surveys his estate. Everything he sees belongs to him. Yet this may all be about to change. If the newly formed Scottish parliament have their way, Sir John and others will be selling their land to local people, whether they like it or not! Labour MP Alan Wilson sees the bill as an attempt to "right historical wrongs" - to open up land tenure to rural communities in order to bring about economic development and repopulation. The landlords look on the bill less favourably. They compare the bill to the "Mugabe land grab" and communist revolution, arguing that such "social engineering" would be disastrous for Scotland. For Alan Wilson such arguments are unconvincing. He asserts: "Call it social engineering... I would call it liberating for future generations the land in which people live and work". Robert Wilson - Down in the GlenRobert Wilson was one of Scotland`s greatest singers who died in 1964 aged 57. The original presenter of the White Heather Club in the late 1950`s, his early career in the 1930`s was with the D`Oyly Carte Opera Company. Down in the Glen was one of his best known songs. Down in the Glen (Harry Gordon / Tommie Connor) Twilight is softly falling as the sun sinks in the West, The one I love is calling, "Shepherd, come home to rest." At hush of even-tide, O'er the hills beyond the Clyde, I go roaming to my heaven, Down in the Glen Though humble it may be, There an angel waits for me, In that lonely little heaven, Down in the glen. Across the moonlit heather, My lassie calls as I roam, 'Tis soon we'll be together In that heaven we call "home". The sheep are in the fold, And there's peace worth more than gold, For that shepherd in that heaven, Down in the glen.

There where the hills are sleeping, Now feel the blood a-leaping, High as the spirits of the old Highland men. Towering in gallant fame, Scotland my mountain hame, High may your proud standards gloriously wave, Land of my high endeavour, Land of the shining river, Land of my heart for ever, Scotland the brave. High in the misty Highlands, Out by the purple islands, Brave are the hearts that beat Beneath Scottish skies. Wild are the winds to meet you, Staunch are the friends that greet you, Kind as the love that shines from fair maiden's eyes. Towering in gallant fame, Scotland my mountain hame, High may your proud standards gloriously wave, Land of my high endeavour, Land of the shining river, Land of my heart for ever, Scotland the brave. Far off in sunlit places, Sad are the Scottish faces, Yearning to feel the kiss Of sweet Scottish rain. Where tropic skies are beaming, Love sets the heart a-dreaming, Longing and dreaming for the homeland again. Towering in gallant fame, Scotland ...
