Eija-Liisa Ahtila is one of the leading contemporary video artists working with video, photography, sculpture and drawing. Most important to her is story telling and the variation and combination of time, narration and space. We met her at her great retrospective exhibition at the K21 Kunstsammlung NRW where her newest work "where is where" had been shown. ---- Eija-Liisa Ahtila gehört zu den führenden Vertreterinnen der zeitgenössischen Videokunst. Sie selbst versteht sich als "visual artist", die verschiedensten Medien wie Video, Fotografie, Skulptur und Malerei benutzt. Besonders wichtig ist ihr das "Geschichten erzählen". In einer Kombination aus Narration, Umgang mit Zeit und Raum, lässt sie kaleidoskopartige Installationen entstehen. EIJA-LIISA AHTILA PARALLELLA VÄRLDAR Eija-Liisa Ahtila är en av Nordens internationellt mest erkända samtidskonstnärer. Sedan sitt genombrott på nittiotalet är hon en föregångare i utvecklingen av filmiska installationer. Ahtilas verk rör sig i gränstrakter -- de ifrågasätter filmspråkets konventioner och utmanar invanda perspektiv. Hennes särställning i filmvärlden blev tydlig för en bredare publik då hon satt i juryn för spelfilm under Venedigs filmfestival 2011. Eija-Liisa Ahtila bor och verkar i Helsingfors. Hennes verk har visats på bland annat MoMA, New York; Jeu de Paume, Paris; Tate Modern, London, och Kunsthalle Zürich. Hon har deltagit i ett stort antal internationella utställningar, däribland Venedigbiennalen 1999 och 2005. Curator: Lena Essling Utställningen produceras av Moderna Museet i samarbete med Museet för nutidskonst Kiasma i Helsingfors. Den turnerar till Carré d'Art i Nîmes, Frankrike. ARS 11 - Changes your perception of Africa and contemporary art The ARS 11 exhibition investigates Africa in contemporary art. In addition to artists living in Africa, the show also features others who live outside the continent, artists of African descent as well as Western artists who address African issues in their work. The exhibition features some 300 works by a total of 30 artists. The Kiasma Theatre also has a programme of ARS events and performances. The themes of the exhibition, such as migration, environmental problems and urban life are global, issues that affect us all. At best ARS 11 can produce new understanding and also provide background information on the situation in today's Africa. The exhibition will extend the idea of what Africa, contemporary art and African contemporary art are today. ARS 11 in a nutshell ARS 11 is a major international art event filling Kiasma with artworks, performances, screenings, discussions and workshops. The ARS 11 curator team are Pirkko Siitari, Director of Kiasma, Arja Miller, Chief Curator, and Jari-Pekka Vanhala, Curator. The ARS 11 programme for Kiasma Theatre will be compiled by Riitta Aarniokoski. Premiada en la Bienal de Venecia de 1999, Turbulence es una videoinstalación de Shirin Neshat formada por dos proyecciones en blanco y negro en las paredes opuestas de un espacio oscuro, en las que aparecen dos cantantes, un hombre y una mujer. De manera sencilla, Shirin Neshat reflexiona sobre el papel que desempeñan los sexos en la sociedad iraní. A partir de la filmación del juego popular mexicano de los «trompos» ya través de la sensualidad del movimiento de las peonzas, Miguel Ángel Ríos habla en A morir de lucha, poder y violencia, nociones asociadas a la idea de supervivencia, y nos propone una metáfora del individuo contemporáneo en un mundo en que la guerra es todavía un medio de relación con el otro. Una parte importante de la producción artística de Adrian Paci está relacionada con los problemas de los inmigrantes, su condición de permanente temporalidad, su desubicación y su identidad indecible. En la obra expuesta, el escenario es el aeropuerto de San José, en California donde un grupo de personas se mueve hacia las escaleras de embarque de un avión formando una fila, mientras los aviones despegan y aterrizan en el paisaje de fondo. En sus trabajos en video, Eija-Liisa Ahtila combina el realismo documental y la fantasía cinematográfica.
