Visual Democracy: Dorothea Lange

Dorothea Lange was the countrys most influential documentary photographer in the period 1930-1950. She worked for several state and federal government agencies documenting the social issues of this period: the Great Depression, FDR and his New Deals war against the depression crisis, Californias World War II defense industries, the Japanese internment, and the 1945 inaugural meeting of the United Nations in San Francisco. In Professor Linda Gordons lecture on Langes vision of American democracy, she suggests how visual images helped shape our political ethics. Scenes from the Great Depression

From the Dorothea Lange Collection - photos of migrants in California during the Great Depression (1935-1945). It is interesting how the thread of comments for this video has taken a life of its own. I posted this video as a tribute to Dorothea Lange, as her amazing photos transcend both race and time. She had a unique ability to recognize and capture the soul of people who struggled under extreme conditions. Many people from the Great Depression went on to lead long productive lives, and it is heartening to read comments from relatives of those who survived. Perhaps we can all learn from the photos and the glimpse they provide into American history.

Dorothea Lange, a tribute

Music by René Aubry - Dérives. Dorothea Lange (May 26, 1895 -- October 11, 1965) was an influential American documentary photographer and photojournalist, best known for her Depression-era work for the Farm Security Administration (FSA). Lange's photographs humanized the tragic consequences of the Great Depression and profoundly influenced the development of documentary photography. In 1941, Lange was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for excellence in photography. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, she gave up the prestigious award to record the forced evacuation of Japanese Americans to relocation camps, on assignment for the War Relocation Authority (WRA).

Dorothea Lange's Black South (During the Great Depression)

Dorothea Lange is a famous American photographer. She worked for the Farm Security Administration, taking pictures of people who were affected by the Great Depression during the 1930s. She is most known for her Migrant Mother picture, which became "an iconic image of the Great Depression." See en.wikipedia.org Lange's work took her all over the South, where she took pictures of both struggling blacks and whites. These photos, which were are all available from the Library of Congress' online archives, are a vivid reminder of how tough those days were. The black folks in these pictures look hardened, but not broken. They are lean, strong, and unbowed. Life is hard, and they accept it as such. These pictures were taken in Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, North Carolina, and Texas. The music is from a traditional spiritual performed by Texas gospel singer Blind Willie Johnson (vocal and guitar) and Willie B. Harris (vocal) in 1927.

Portrait of Imogen Cunningham - Dorothea Lange (Ch 10)

In this Academy Award nominated film by Meg Partridge, Imogen Cunningham speaks in the first person describing her work and her life as a photographer. These audio transcripts were recorded by my father, Rondal Partridge. Much later, I found these tapes and structured my film around Imogen's own words, adding her images that accompanied these stories. Like many good storytellers, Imogen refined her tales over time, and I was familiar with many of these stories and photographs that accompanied them, so it was not difficult to mesh images with her words. www.photoliaison.com
