Arts and Culture: MoMA presents "Case History", the new series by Boris MikhailovAn unparalleled truth of the circumstances of people living in Ukraine in the 90s who have been left homeless by the collapse of the Soviet Union.
All in vain (Boris Mikhailov)The perfect mash-up of the music of Chumbawamba with the photography of Boris Mikhailov. From Amazon From found photographs ("Luriki", 1971-85) to cinematic vistas ("By the Ground", 1991), from staged self-portraiture ("I am Not I", 1992) to social documentation ("Case History", 1997-98), Boris Mikhailov has experimented with many photographic forms and styles, in a constant urge to question reality. At the beginning of his career as a photographer, Mikhailov earned his living by retouching and colouring ordinary family photographs ("Luriki" 1971-85). Apart from his commercial work, he photographed the rituals of Soviet public life in Red Series (1968-75) and ridiculed the regime and its visual propaganda in his series Sots Art (1975-86). At around the same time, he conceived his series "Unfinished Dissertation", which consisted of hundreds of images glued on the back of an unfinished dissertation, that he had found in a dustbin. Finally, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, he focused on social subject matter, documenting poverty in Kharkov and Moscow in his series "By the Ground" (1991), and hiring homeless people for his recent series "Case History" (1997-98). Mikhailov's dissidence is both political and visual. He has explored the various possibilities of photography, combining its uses as a conceptual project, an historical record, a political commentary, and as a work of art. "Yesterday's Sandwich" will feature one of Mikhailov's earliest bodies of work, his ...

1979 Challenge Cup Opening Ceremonies, ContinuedUnofficially, it's called The Embarrassment. There aren't any books about it. No one issued any cards to commemorate it. In fact, you can barely find any record of it. It was the best of three 1979 Challenge Cup series between a team of NHL All-Stars and the Soviet National team. The international showdown preempted the NHL's regularly scheduled 1978-79 All-Star Game. The Challenge Cup was billed rightfully as the ultimate showdown. The NHL drew on its finest talent - whether Americans, Canadians or Swedes - for the unprecedented confrontation against hockey's version of the Big Red Machine. The league iced an incredible array of talent - Mike Bossy, Guy Lafleur, Gilbert Perreault, Bryan Trottier, Larry Robinson, Bobby Clarke, Bob Gainey, Denis Potvin, Darryl Sittler, and Serge Savard, to mention a few. Who could've imagined this Hall of Fame collection of talent would come up empty? The Soviets meanwhile were unknown to most hockey fans. Still the line-up included Hall f Fame goaltender Vladislav Tretiak, right-winger Boris Mikhailov, Valery Kharlamov, and Vladimir Petrov. Future NHLers, Sergei Makarov and defenseman Vyacheslav Fetisov also manned the Soviet squad. Makarov contributed a goal and two assisted in the three games, while an injury forced Fetisov to sit out. Sure, the Soviets were talented, but no one expected the NHL to lose. Instead of celebrating a decisive victory and winning global bragging rights, the NHL'ers wrung their hands as they watched the ...

Berlinische Galerie: Boris Mikhailov.Time is out of joint.Ausstellung Boris Mikhailov. Time is out of joint.

Boris Mikhailov - Time is out of Joint
Canadiens vs. the Soviet Red Army - Dec. 31, 1975Broadcast Date: Dec. 31, 1975 Three years after the Summit Series captivated hockey fans across Canada, the Soviet Union's best players return for a New Year's Eve matchup with the Montreal Canadiens in 1975. Almost 19000 fans are on hand at the Forum to witness a match representative of the ongoing Cold War, pitting the freedom and democracy of the West against the communist repression of the USSR In these segments from the game, the teams' disparate styles of play are on show: the Soviets' puck control and long forward passes, and the Habs' suffocating defense and creative on-the-fly attack. • The match was officially billed as an exhibition contest, but for the members of the Canadiens, the game was a showdown between the best hockey teams in the world. Just as the Habs dominated the NHL most seasons, the Soviet Red Army team (known domestically as CSKA Moscow) was perennially atop the Soviet elite league standings. • Combined, the two teams boasted an astounding 37 championship titles. • Soviet goaltender Vladislav Tretiak faced seven shots before his cross-rink rival, Ken Dryden, saw a single puck come his way. The Canadiens scored two goals in the first eight minutes of the game. Early in the second period, Boris Mikhailov scored one for the Soviets before the Habs got a third goal. The Red Army scored two more in the third. • Although the Canadiens outshot the Soviets 38-13, the historic game ended in a 3-3 draw.
