Joseph Shore-Boris Godounov in three scenes.mpgRobert Gutter conducts the North Carolina Symphony. I know it is rare for a baritone to sing Boris, but there is precedent. My mentor, Jerome Hines, and I consulted whether I should sing it. He said, "Sure a real baritone can sing it. Somewhere I have a tape of Lawrence Tibbett singing the monologue." With that permission I set out to learn Boris in Russian. The Verdi baritone, Chet Ludgin, had sung Boris in many opera houses including NYCO. I found that in the Rimsky-Korsakov orchestration my voice fit nicely with the part. Certainly the role was perfect for my ideas of theatre.

BORIS JOHNSON URGED TO SACK DISGRACED COUNCILLORBertha Joseph is a Conservative councillor and deputy chair of the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority (LFEPA). She was recently found guilty by a standards committee of using charitable donations to buy expensive clothing for herself, and banned for the maximum period of six months from operating in her home borough of Brent. Despite this, the mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has so far refused to remove her from her £19000-a-year role with LFEPA.
