HOMMAGE a AUGUST SANDERThe German photographer August Sander (1876-1964) has spent part of his life in the German Westerwald. There he took his famous portraits of local farmers in the '20s and early '30s. - Today Sander's pictures are highly dealt on international trade markets of fine arts. And here the film begins: A contemporary art auction in Britain. Very proper, elegant. Dark suits, white cuffs. Cut to a country road in the Westerwald. We see simple old German farmers and their wives rummaging around in their houses to find their own Sander prints of themselves when young, and reminiscing about the photographer, who struck them all as a decent man. The film tells about the encounter with photographs by August Sander, it tells about the remarkable relationship between the photographer and the people he portrayed and finally it examines the art of photo realism. 'Hommage à August Sander' was first shown by the International Shortfilm Festival Oberhausen in 1977. In the international competition it has got the Price of the Staff of the Festival.

Viele Menschen dort koennen sich an ihn erinnern und haben in ihren Schubladen und auf dem Dachboden Fotos, die er damals aufgenommen hat. „Hommage a August Sander" berichtet ueber Begegnungen mit Sanders Bildern , ist eine Impression und eine Suche nach den Spuren, die er hinterlassen hat. Und der Film will die besonderen Beziehungen, die zwischen den Menschen im Westerwald und dem Fotografen bestanden haben, rekonstruieren.
