Andres Serrano - The MorgueThe Morgue Andres Serrano's, large color photographs taken in morgues are portraits, figure studies, and studies of the hands, feet, heads, and genitals of corpses. We see, at close range and larger than life, stab wounds and scalpel incisions, flesh bloated from drowning and discolored by poison, ears and noses half burned away, fists clenched as though to ward off blows. Serrano had permission to take lights and backdrops into the morgues, that is, he worked with the freedom and control of the studio artist, yet handled his subjects like a mediocre amateur. Light: from how-to books of glamour photography, unconsidered, predictable; emphasis: dull when not haphazard; drawing: unresolved when not just rendering; drapery: flat tending to featureless; compositions: only arrangements--with so much in each picture taken up by black background, chalk-white linen, unachieved or inexpressive forms and other visually inert or only nominally visual material, what's to compose? Art's beautiful mutilated dead and beautiful death agonies are myriad. At random, then (and setting aside all dying and dead Christs), Why did Philip II want Bosch's damned in his Escorial bedroom? Caravaggio's patrons to live with Goliath's and Holofernes' severed heads? Zurbaran's with his Saint Agatha carrying her severed breasts on a silver plate? Partly for the discharge and containment of torturing thoughts and emotions (including sadistic and masochistic ones). Serrano worked apparently unaffected by ...
Andres Serrano - Piss ChristAndres Serrano (born August 15, 1950 in New York City) is an American photographer and artist who has become notorious through his photos of corpses and his use of faeces and bodily fluids in his work, notably his controversial work "Piss Christ", a red-tinged photograph of a crucifix submerged in a glass container of what was purported to be the artist's own urine. Piss Christ is a 1987 photograph by artist and photographer Andres Serrano. It depicts a small plastic crucifix submerged in a glass of the artist's urine. The piece was a winner of the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art's "Awards in the Visual Arts" competition, which is sponsored in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, a United States Government agency that offers support and funding for artistic projects. A print of the photograph was damaged using a screwdriver or icepick on April 17, 2011 while on exhibit in Avignon, France Music; Raison d'être - Euphrosyne Dark Ambient // Sweden

Andres Serrano at Yvon Lambert - September 4, 2008In this show, titled "SHIT", Serrano has created large chromogenic prints from photographs of various types of excrement. Anyone familiar with the artist will immediatly think of his most well known work, "Piss Christ" (a print of which is also on display in this exhibition), and will recognize that Serrano is no stranger to working with bodily substances. On the surface, of course, the subject matter can be evocative, as we are naturally conditioned to think of feces as something dirty and disgusting, something to be disposed of. After all, the term shit itself is a vulgar word. But the fact is, feces are a perfectly natural thing that every animal creates, and further it is created from within. In nature, animals typcially leave scat out in the open, where it can be examined for the study of animal behaviour. So, with these photographs we are invited to examine the sometimes beautiful forms that can arrise from this activity. The quality of Serrano's compositions highlights the unique forms and shapes that come about from that lowest of all creation, shit.

Islam and the Left's Assault on Free Speech - Steven Emerson (1 of 2)Twenty years ago, Andres Serrano put a plastic crucifix in a glass of urine, photographed it and called it art. Conservatives in particular weren't pleased: not with Mr. Serrano, not with his picture, and not with the National Endowment for the Arts, which had forked over $15000 in taxpayer money to support this uretic gesture. This anniversary comes to mind following the British government's decision last week to ban Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders from British soil as an "undesirable person." Mr. Wilders is also being prosecuted for hate speech in his native Holland, where he faces up to 16 months in prison if convicted. His alleged crime involves making a short film called "Fitna," which draws a straight line between Quranic verses and acts of Islamist terror. Mr. Wilders has also called for banning the Quran, which he labels a "fascist book" on a par with Hitler's "Mein Kampf." Whatever else might be said about Mr. Wilders's travel ban and prosecution, it helps put into context the events of 1989. In the case of Mr. Serrano, liberal Americans went into a lather about defending his rights to artistic expression and freedom of speech against the parochial leaders of the religious right, men like Jesse Helms and Pat Robertson. Never mind that the worst of their threats involved withholding public funding; fundamental things were said to be at stake. What's remarkable is that his most serious detractors -- those that aren't themselves Islamists or spokesmen for supposedly ...
