Amelia Mary Earhart, (born July 24, 1897; missing July 2, 1937) was a noted American aviation pioneer and author. Earhart was the first woman to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross, awarded for becoming the first aviatrix to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. During an attempt to make a circumnavigational flight of the globe in 1937 in a Purdue-funded Lockheed L-10 Electra, Earhart disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island. Finding Amelia Earhart

Full story: news.discovery.com A small, broken cosmetic glass jar, fragments of rouge from a woman's compact, buttons, parts of a pocket knife that was beaten apart to detach the blades, a cloth that appears to have been shaped as a bow -- are these objects evidence of Amelia Earhart's struggle to survive as a castaway on a remote and uninhabited South Pacific Island? And what about eleven fire features filled with fish, bird and turtle bones? Do these campsites hold the remains of Amelia's last meals? In this audio slide show, Ric Gillespie, executive director of The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR), tells Discovery News what he found on his June expedition to Nikumaroro island. It is here that Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan are believed to have landed when running out of fuel on July 2, 1937. And it is here that they may have survived for days, perhaps even months, as castaways. Credits: Audio Slide Show by Rossella Lorenzi. Pictures courtesy of TIGHAR (www.tighar.org)

1-15 In Search Of... Amelia Earhart (Part 1 of 3)

Season 1 Episode 15 Part 1 Hosted by Leonard Nimoy and broadcast weekly from 1976 to 1982, In Search Of... is the greatest mystery documentary show ever. I grew up watching this show, enjoying the spine-tingling presentation of quasi-fact and dramatic synthesizer-heavy music of Rinder and Lewis. I am not selling this material, neither am I interested in buying bootlegs. It is currently commercially unavailable, so I am joining with others to make evaluation of this excellent series possible. I'm posting these videos to fill some gaps left by recently suspended users (from whom I downloaded these). Check my subscriptions to find users with more episodes, and drop me a note if you have posted any "new" ones. Thanks for watching!

Amelia Earhart: The Price of Courage

The first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, Amelia Earhart was one of America's first celebrities. After only a few years as a pilot she became the best-known female flier in America, not only for her daring and determination, but also for her striking looks and outspoken personality. Amelia even had an uncanny resemblance to Charles Lindbergh, the most famous man in America at the time, that publicists seized upon nicknaming her :Lady Lindy." Three weeks short of her 40th birthday, Earhart disappeared over the Pacific Ocean, and her story became legend.

New Efforts to Locate Amelia Earhart's Plane

What became of Amelia Earhart's plane when it disappeared over the Pacific 75 years ago has long intrigued aviation fans. On Tuesday, US government officials and a private historical group are expected to announce a new effort to locate the famed aviator's twin-engine Lockheed. The effort, projected to kick off in July, will be financed with roughly half a million dollars in private funds, according to people familiar with the details. It will focus on a remote Pacific atoll called Nikumaroro, halfway between Hawaii and Australia, near where the plane carrying Ms. Earhart and a companion may have gone down during an attempted around-the-world flight.

70th Anniversay of Earhart Disappearance Mystery - VOA Story

July 2. 2007 marks the 70th anniversary of one of the great mysteries of the twentieth century. On that day, celebrated aviator Amelia Earhart disappeared without a trace. Interest in the woman and the mystery persists to this day. Visitors to the National Air and Space Museum in Washington continue to seek out information about Amelia Earhart. "Earhart's disappearance has certainly kept her name in the public eye," says curator Dorothy Cochrane. In fact, 70 years after her disappearance, Earhart is still considered the world's most famous woman pilot. In the 1920s and 30s - the golden age of aviation - when men like Charles Lindbergh were breaking records and making headlines, Amelia Earhart proved she could compete on an equal footing. In 1932, five years after Lindbergh made his groundbreaking solo flight across the Atlantic, Earhart did the same. "And she was also only the second person to solo, which a lot of people don't realize, after Charles Lindbergh did it in 1927," says Cochrane. National Air and Space Museum curator Dorothy Cochrane says Amelia Earhart was both a pioneer for women's rights and a pioneer aviator. Many of her flying records were firsts for both genders. Earhart was the first person to fly solo from California to Hawaii, from Los Angeles to Mexico City and from Mexico City to Newark. In 1937, six years after Wiley Post circumnavigated the globe, Earhart set out to become the first woman to fly around the world. "She wanted this to be her last ...

Amelia Earhart

LANGFORD -- Gabrielle Giet had a near death experience 7 years ago, and says it strengthened her psychic ability. Today Giet contacted Richard Gillespie who has been searching for famed American Pilot Amelia Earhart, and told him where she thinks he can find the missing remains. For 22 yrs Gillespie has tried to put the pieces together of a round the globe voyage that ended in mystery some 70 yrs ago. But until now, all The International Group For Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) has had to go on are a few bone fragments, believed to belong to Earhart. TIGHAR will begin searching for the plane fuselage in June of 2012 once they accumulate some more funding. They say if they can't find what they are looking for, only then will they move towards where Giet marked a large "X" of the waters off of Nikumaroro, and area that is significantly outside the search grid.

What Happened to Amelia Earhart

www.youtube.com I've just posted a new video from the upcoming film "Earhart's Electra." this clip is Interviews with three eyewitnesses, who were on Saipan in July of 1944 when Amelia Earhart's airplane was found and destroyed by the US Military. Thomas E Devine, Robert Wallack (who found her briefcase) and Julious Nabers, who decoded the messages for Colonel Wallace that stated they had found her plane, and that they were going to destroy it. He also guarded the plane for 24 hours. These interviews are part of my film "Earhart," the official website is www.earhartmovie.com, and I'm hoping to start filming the dramatic portions in the spring of 07. All three of these gentlemen have passed away, and my condolences to each of their families. They were generous to tell me their stories on camera, and only hoped that one day I could make my film about what really happened to Amelia. Based on interviews with US GI's who saw Earhart's plane on Saipan. I've collected over 200 eyewitnesses who saw her after she disappeared - people who claim her plane came down in Mili Atoll, where she was arrested by Japanese forces, she and the plane were taken from Mili Atoll, transported by ship to Majuro, then Jaluit, then Saipan where she was incarcerated in Garapan prison for a number of years before being executed. Her plane was found on Aslito airfield June 1944, by a number of US Marines (6 whom I've interviewed) where it was destroyed by US forces.
