Philippe Halsman commence sa carrière de photographe à Paris dans les années 30. Il ouvre un studio de portrait à Montparnasse en 1934 où il photographie Gide, Chagall, Malraux, Le Corusier et beaucoup d'autres artistes et intellectuels. Il s'installe aux Etats-Unis en 1940 où son travail est très vite remarqué. En 1951, il est invité par les fondateurs de Magnum Photos à les rejoindre en tant que contributeur....
