Michael Wolf est né à Munich en 1954. Il a grandi aux Etats-Unis et étudié à l'Université de Berkeley, Californie, ainsi qu'à celle d'Essen en Allemagne (Folkwang School), avec Otto Steinert comme professeur. Il a vécu et travaillé comme photographe et auteur en Chine à partir de 1994. Il a été exposé dans de multiples musées à travers le monde et est présent dans de nombreuses collections muséales.

Michael Wolf (1954) verwierf alom erkenning en waardering voor zijn langlopende project over het verdichte bouwen in het explosief groeiend China. Om aan de enorme behoefte aan woningen en kantoren te voldoen, wordt de ene wolkenkrabber na de andere torenflat uit de grond gestampt. In China, en met name Hong Kong, wordt ‘verdicht’ gebouwd, dus nieuwbouwprojecten pal naast elkaar.
