Malick Sidibé est né en 1936 à Soloba (Mali).
En 1955, jeune diplômé de la Maison des Artisans Soudanais, il est initié à la photographie dans le studio « Photo Service » dirigé par un français surnommé « Gégé la Pellicule ». Ses premiers reportages datent de 1957. C'est en 1962 qu'il ouvre son studio.
