Herb Ritts est né à Los Angeles le 13 août 1952. Ce n'est qu'à la fin des années 70 que Herb Ritts décide de se consacrer à la photographie. Son premier succès est une série de portraits de l'acteur richard Gere.
Au cours des années 80 et 90, il photographie surtout des portraits de célébrités et des photographies artistiques de modèles. Il a notamment travaillé avec Madonna, Cindy Crawford, kofi Annan, Jack Nicholson, Elizabeth Taylor, Mylène Farmer, Michael Jackson etc.......
