Né en 1962 à Johannesbourg, Afrique du Sud, il vit et travaille à Durban et Paris. Photojournaliste, il rejoint le collectif Afrapix (1986-1990) et commence par témoigner des fusillades dans les townships. La qualité de ses reportages lui vaut d'être appelé par Reuters (1986-1988) et l'AFP (1993-19994). Puis Tillim devient free-lance et s'engage à couvrir les conflits mondiaux.
