Jusqu'au début des années 20, Weston préfère utiliser son objectif anachromatique, s'inscrivant ainsi dans une tendance "flou artistique". Mais il s'oriente vers une nouvelle esthétique ("straight photography" ou "photographie pure"). Ce changement fut renforcé par sa rencontre avec Alfred Stieglitz, Charles Sheeler et Paul Strand.
