Né en 1894 à Budapest, Andor (André en hongrois) n'a que huit ans quand son père meurt. Son oncle, Lipot Hoffman, se charge de son éducation et de celle de ses deux frères : Jenö et Imre. Diplômé de l'Académie de commerce de Budapest, il occupe un emploi à la Bourse. Sa première photographie connue date de 1912 : Jeune homme endormi, qui annonce de façon prémonitoire ce qui fera l'essentiel de son art, à savoir, la clarté du style et la primauté de l'émotion.
