Leonie Hampton-Purchas at Kahmann Gallery

Hampton’s (1978) fascination for the subject family influences all her series. Intrigued by the complex relationship between family members, Hampton photographed families in different parts of the world. Interesting is her approach; by becoming part of the family she succeeds in closing the gap between photographer and subject. ‘Hampton’s treatment is unique, truly personal (…).

By immersing herself in families in Rome, London, Cuba, Los Angeles and France, she has already confronted the needs to make herself forgotten as the photographer in or...

Eikoh Hosoe - Irrationality

Eikoh Hosoe (Japan, 1933) is undoubtedly among the most important masters of photography since World War II. He is known for his psychologically charged images, often exploring subjects such as death, erotic obsession and irrationality.

Kahmann Gallery is proud to present a retrospective of 25 beautiful black and white silver prints. Hosoe graduated from The Tokyo College of Photography in 1951 and had his first exhibit in 1956, a one-man show. VERGE MIAMI : DUTCH NUDES

“DUTCH NUDES” Photographers:

ED VAN DER ELKSEN (The Netherlands 1925 - 1990)
Ed van der Elsken was born in Amsterdam in 1925. Inspired and shaped by his relationships, extensive international travels and work abroad, Van der Elsken was known as the “enfant terrible” of Dutch photography. A talented photographer and filmmaker, he documented his meetings with people in photographs and films for more than 40 years. He preferred to photograph striking individuals and would often attract the subject’s attention before taking the picture. Many of his subjects therefore look straight into the le...

Martien Mulder - From Blue To Blue

The work of New York based fine art photographer Martien Mulder (1971, NL) will be represented by Kahmann Gallery from September 2010. The exhibition “From Blue To Blue” highlights 10 years of personal work.

Mulder’s colorpalette is very specific, and some of her photographs could be considered monotones. This gives them a quiet strength. She is a minimalist, but her images are sober in a warm and accessible manner. She enjoys pointing her lens at many different subjects in search for the same result…a calm delicately abstract representation of them.

Martien Mulder’s pho...

As it may be - Maura Sullivan

A little girl stands in the forest, listening to the sound of the wind in the trees. Why? Is she waiting for her father to come home? Did her sister call her there?

This is; ‘As it May be’.

A solo-exhibition with photographs from the New York- based artist, Maura Sullivan (1971). Sullivan makes short movies in a single photograph. You can search for the meaning, the words, the tension, to try to explain the story. But not searching for a deeper meaning will still leave you with beautiful, well styled, photography. The beauty is in the restraint: the images reveal enough to draw you in and withhold ...

TRANSVERSE Photo works by Schilte & Portielje

A surrealist world, located in the area of tension between photography, drawing and painting. A world inhabited by graceful, dreamlike and audacious creatures. This is the world of Schilte & Portielje.

The figures who play the lead role in the duo's photographic works are characterised by the mystery that surrounds them; a sort of intangibility, impenetrability. Elegance, power and intransigence seem to struggle with each other dominance. Alongside several older works, Kahmann Gallery will present a new series on which Schilte & Portielje have worked intensively for the last two years. This series shows even more cle...

Gerard Fieret (The Haque 1924 - 2009) - Fotograficus

The Netherlands has lost a great artist. A poet, a designer, but first of all, a photographer. Gerard Fieret passed away last January at the respectable age of 85. Kahmann Gallery is proud to present a tribute to his work.

Fieret's photographic works have long been underestimated. Fortunately this seems to be changing. Words of appreciation mark the articles written about the photographer, such as the cover article in the renowned American magazine Art and Auction and the homage in the international photography magazine Eyemazing. Also the growing popularity on auctions in Amsterdam and New York indicates the esteem towards ...

Maura Sullivan/Barry Kornbluh/Tiane Doan na Champassak/Tessa Posthuma de Boer - CLOSE

In the group show 'CLOSE' Kahmann Gallery presents work of four pronounced and distinctive photographers. The common denominator is a kind of intimacy, all photographers stay close to themselves. They leave little space between elements or parts. All in their own remarkable way.

Maura Sullivan (USA 1973) is intrigued by what is taking place behind the scenes, underneath the skin. Her images are like the torn out pages of a made up book. Sullivan explores the feelings we all share about fear, love and a time lost. Her cinematic work makes us curious. There is an intriguing tension in all of her work.

The subjec...

Helen Levitt - New York Photographs

Kahmann Gallery is proud and privileged to open her doors for the first time with the world famous work of New York photographer Helen Levitt.

95-years old Helen Levitt is still living in New York, where she worked as a photographer for 70 years. She started her career observing and photographing children in the poorer neighbourhoods, in search for the poetry of daily life. Levitt works like a choreographer; the streets are her theatre, the people her actors. Her photos resemble small plays in which movement, rhythm, form and colour contemplate each other. She photographs daily life in an inventive and humorous way, occasion...

ATA & EVA Ata Kandó, Eva Besnyö

HUP gallery Amsterdam is very proud of its' retrospective of the best works from the oeuvre of photographers Ata Kandó and Eva Besnyö.

Hungary was the country where both Ata Kandó (1913) and Eva Besnyö (1910-2003) have their roots. They first met in 1952 and from that moment the two became best friends. Ata and Eva always hoped to do an exhibit together. We are very pleased that we now can make that a reality. Both women have had a great influence on photography and the fact they were best friends strengthened the influence of Hungarian photography in Holland.

The works exhibited in th...
