Photoink was established in September 2001 by Devika Daulet-Singh as a photo agency and a publication design studio. As a photo agency, we have been producing and presenting contemporary Indian photography across the international media through our partner photo agencies – Contact Press Images (USA & France), Focus (Germany) and independently in Asia. Photoink photographers have been published in Forbes, Fortune, Business 2.0, Businessweek, Newsweek, Life, Marie Claire, People, Men’s Journal, Liberation, Le Monde 2, Geo, Biba, Editions Solar, Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin, Manager Magazin, Die Zeit, Der Spiegel, Stern, D magazine, Chi, IO Donna, L'Internazionale, World Business magazine, Red Herring, Time Asia amongst others.
Pursuing editorial assignments for international magazines provided one kind of avenue for photographers to show their work. There was also a need to develop an audience in India and abroad for the personal work that was not assigned, through exhibitions and the books we started publishing in 2004. Photoink photographers have been exhibited in New Delhi, Copenhagen, New York, Amsterdam, Leeuwarden, Frankfurt, Arles, Paris and Marseilles, Thimphu, Barcelona and Vitoria.
In continuation of the work we have done, the need to set up a permanent gallery dedicated to photography was a logical step forward to bridge the gap between contemporary photography and the general public here in India. In 2008, we built a gallery technically equipped to present both contemporary and vintage photographic works. Spread across 3500 sq. feet, the agency, digital studio, bookshop and gallery now reside under one roof. We represent some photographers as their primary gallery as well as show guest artists from the international world of photography. In 2009, we collaborated with Steidl, the renowned German publishing house to create Steidlville, New Delhi within the gallery premises. |
