Found in the centre of Lugano in a building donated to the canton by the engineer, Secondo Reali, the Museo Cantonale d’Arte was inaugurated in 1987. The buildings that house the Museum in all probability represent the first ones erected after the middle of the 15th century on today's Via Canova - formerly called Via Castello - which is a zone rich in artistic heritage. In consideration of these premises, the overall restoration and restructuring work has been aimed at both safeguarding and giving new life to the historical and architectural profile of the buildings in such a way that the structure is able to house a museum which has its own specific needs. The activity of the Museo Cantonale d'Arte has two parallel objectives: the conservation and study of the Museum's permanent collection, which is above all made up of works belonging to the XIX and XX centuries; and the planning/presentation of temporary exhibitions. The works that form part of the permanent collection in the main come from the artistic patrimony of the Canton of Ticino. These have been added to by the donations and works left in deposit on the part of other Swiss museums (Geneva, Basel, Zurich and Winterthur), by the Swiss Confederation, the ProMuseo Association and by private donors. The constant growth of the collection represents one of the Museum's principal objectives. This is carried out by way of a specific acquisitions policy in documenting the different components of artistic development from the Nineteenth Century up until the present day in relation to the Ticino region, an area that finds itself wedged between northern and southern Europe. Regarding its exhibition activity, in the course of almost twenty years the Museo Cantonale d'Arte has presented approximately ninety exhibitions which have explored very different themes: ranging from painting to sculpture, photography, the video, architecture and graphic works.
