Instituto Terra is a civil non-profit organization founded in 1999 by Lélia Deluiz Wanick Salgado and Sebastião Ribeiro Salgado Junior. It is located at the Bulcão Farm, Aimorés – MG and it covers and area of 676 hectares. It is recognized as a Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN) by a decree issued by the State Forestry Instituto (IEF) of the state of Minas Gerais on October 7th, 1998. It is the first RPPN to be created in a degraded area of the Atlantic Forest. The Rio Doce Valley area, where the Instituto is located, was originally covered by exuberant forests of the biome of the Atlantic Forest, but now it is in a state of rapid degradation. Some of the causes are:: * The colonization process provoked timber exploitation and widespread deforestation; * The construction of the Vitória-Minas railway accelerated environmental disturbance due to the high demand for firewood and to the forest fires from sparks thrown out by locomotives.; * Furthermore, other agricultural activities, such as coffee growing and cattle breeding were developed without any heed to the preservation of natural resources. Instituto Terra was created to promote the growth of conservation areas and sustainable use of Atlantic forest biodiversity. Vision The vision includes returning the Atlantic Forest of the Rio Doce Valley to its rich diversity, stimulating social development in the area , promoting the recovery, conservation and balanced use of the environment, strengthening rural life and stemming the exodus of rural population in the region . We want Instituto Terra to become a center of excellence in the areas of restoration and environmental education, sustainable development and social mobilization.
