Afro Modern : Journeys through the Black Atlantic - At Tate Liverpool
Afro Modern : Journeys through the Black Atlantic takes its inspiration from Paul Gilroy’s seminal book The Black Atlantic: Modernity and Double Consciousness 1993. The exhibition explores the fusion of black cultures with other cultures from around the Atlantic and its impact on art from the early twentieth century to the present. It reflects on the notion of the Atlantic Ocean as a ‘continent in negative’, a network of cultures connecting Africa, North and South America, the Caribbean and Europe, and traces the real and imagined journeys across the Atlantic from 1909 to today. Tate Liverpool presents Turner Prize 2007
Turner Prize 2007 exhibition opens today at Tate Liverpool. It features work from the four shortlisted artists Zarina Bhimji, Nathan Coley, Mike Nelson and Mark Wallinger. The winner will be decided by a jury whose members are: Michael Bracewell, writer and critic; Fiona Bradley, Director, Fruitmarket Gallery; Edinburgh; Thelma Golden, Director & Chief Curator, Studio Museum, Harlem; Miranda Sawyer, freelance broadcaster and writer and Christoph Grunenberg, Director of Tate Liverpool and Chairman of the Jury. The winner will be announced on 3 December 2007.
