Hello - Richard Kern
Richard Kern, photographer and underground filmmaker was born in 1954 in Roanoke Rapids/ NC. He lives and works in New York City. After studying fine arts at the university of North Carolina, his career took off in the 80's when he bought a Super 8 camera and started making extravagant films for an underground audience in New York's East Village art scene. In the 90's he switched to photography full time and occasionally directed music videos for bands like Sonic Youth and Marilyn Manson. Within the last 15 years, Kern has published several books and is a regular contributor to a variety of international magazines.

The exhibited photographs are a selected body of works out of his monographs 'House Hunting' and 'Between the Two'. Todd Hido is a San Francisco Bay-Area based photo artist. Marks of Honour is a photo book project and exhibition organised and curated by Nina Poppe and Verena Loewenhaupt.
MoH was conceived in order to reveal the inspiration that a new generation of photographers have gained from the history of photography in the form of books.
13 international photographers were invited to pay artistic tribute to a publication that has been influential to their own work.
All participating works are limited to three copies, each containing the original photo book and its accompanying homage.

Seminal critically examines the dynamic between mass media production and pop culture internalization.The work operates under the assumption that through its dependance on mass media, the contemporary ideal of pop culture has abandoned content through its emphasis on production and marketing process.Here, both static and moving images, as well as sculptural objects aim to construct a modular monument to the material byproducts intrinsic to American pop culture. Seminal unfolds in three stages: the allure, the production, and the promotion.
