"Second Nature" by Guy Tillim

The photographs that Guy Tillim made last year in French Polynesia and São Paulo bring these locations into sharp focus but are devoid of specific emphasis. The weather conditions on a misty Tahiti volcanic beach are depicted in extraordinary, almost palpable detail, but the image shows no traces of the usual idiom for depicting a tropical idyll. After all, this island exists in the Western imagination in terms of its remote, exotic location, dazzling beaches, azure waters, and dusky naked beauties. Guy Tillim, however, gives a new context to this landscape.

Adam Fuss - A Survey of his Work: 1986/2010 at Huis Marseille

This exhibition comprises approximately fifty images by Adam Fuss, dating from 1986 to the present, with examples from his major series as well as the premier of his most recent efforts. The selection will not only gather images that the artist believes to be among his best examples, but also together will recreate the ambiance of a location sacred to him. It has been organized by Fundación MAPFRE (Madrid) in close consultation with the artist and Cheryl Brutvan, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Norton Museum (West Palm Beach, Florida) and curator of his first survey in the United States. Especially...

Marrigje de Maar & Bert Teunissen - Huis Marseille

Existential Theme. Marrigje de Maar photographs the ephemeral world of the home, of being rooted. As she sees it, the essence of this universal human value is mainly to be found inside a house. De Maar seeks those striking and magical places where families have come together for generations—where life has 'worn itself into' a house. Modernity, style and status, folklore and even interior design are all, in her view, subordinate to the revelation of ...

Digital? Analogue! The character and work of master printer Peter Svenson of Aap-Lab

Huis Marseille pays tribute to analog photography by dedicating an exhibition to the character and work of master printer Peter Svenson of Aap-Lab. For more than thirty years, Svenson has been a mainstay to famous photographers as well as some who have just begun their careers. In his hands their photographs become more than nice pictures: they become works of art. Over the past ten years, most amateurs and professional photographers have given up the roll of film and switched to megapixels. Nevertheless, a remarkable international development is on the rise, as many photographers, who carry out their professional work digitally, have chos...

Dayanita Singh expose au Huis Marseille, Museum for Photography

This fall Huis Marseille will be holding a retrospective exhibition of work by the Indian photographer Dayanita Singh (New Delhi, 1961). In 2008 she received an award from the Prince Claus Fund for her discerning view of life in India and for bringing new aesthetics to Indian photography. Singh is internationally recognized for the highly expressive and poetic quality of her photographs, whose incidence of light and visual construction are so meticulously composed that they result in a comment on society and her own past.

Dayanita Singh was trained as a photojournalist at New York’s International Center of Phot...
