Black in America: Eli Reed

A visual compilation harvested from life-enriching travel, astute observation, and creative photography. With persistence and dedication, Magnum photographer Eli Reed pursued what he describes as a “self-assigned” project to translate artistically his encounters with Black Americans from all walks of life, in communities from across the United States, into the medium of photography. The photographs featured in the exhibition are from Reed’s signature 1996 portfolio Black in America, gifted to Eastman House in 2003 to recognize Alison Nordström’s hiring as curator of photographs. Conscience The Ultimate Weapon

A new interpretation of the 1968 Eastman House exhibition featuring civil rights and Vietnam-era photography by Benedict J. Fernandez. More than 800 photographs are part of Conscience The Ultimate Weapon, being presented during the 40th anniversary of the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy.

Originally presented as a slideshow, the images will be displayed via multi-media projection accompanied by a music soundtrack featuring songs from the era. Not Forgotten: Portraits of Life and Death in Rochester

Throughout 2007, Rochester Democrat and Chronicle staff photographer Will Yurman’s goal was to document the stories of the more than 50 homicide victims in the Rochester area. “Every death is a tragedy. But when someone is murdered, it is an act of violence against the victim, their family, their friends and every one of us,” says Yurman. “Homicide victims are not just statistics. They are our neighbors and our family.”
