The Course of History: Götterdämmerung - Bart Michiels

In this third and final installment of The Course of History, Michiels explores the Eastern European battlefields of Russia and Germany.

The term "Götterdämmerung" is adapted from Richard Wagner's final opera of The Ring Cycle and is intended to refer here to the notion of a "violent end" or "destruction" as was the case for the Third Reich. Many of the battlefields in Götterdämmerung are sites of the violent precursors of the collapse of this regime.

Michiels started photographing The Course of History in 2001 focusing on the sublime and pastoral landscapes of...

Richard Barnes - Animal Logic

Examining the role of the museum in contemporary culture, Animal Logic is a behind-the-scenes look at the curatorial process of evaluation and representation. Exhibited concurrently will be Barnes’s Murmur, a photographic series of the flight formations of starlings. The contrast is stark between the free and living natural world of Murmur  and the frozen world of affectation in Animal Logic.

Barnes’s work investigates the relevance of context in archeology, insisting that the viewer to look past what is being displayed to question why and to what effect. Though the objects in each photograph...

Lydia Panas The Mark of Abel

Lydia Panas is an observer of the family dynamic. In her photographs, she manages to capture subtle hints of those complex relationships that tend to exist within the extended family or circles of friends. Her photographs examine the way in which these relationships are simultaneously a product of and an influence upon the identity of each member of the family group. The subjects are arranged similarly in each image; in some verdant setting, they openly face the camera through a narrowly selective depth of field. Through this simple arrangement, the subjects confront the viewer with quieted expression and gesture. Both tension and attracti...

Daughters - Margaret M. de Lange

In her series entitled, Daughters, Margaret de Lange presents black and white photographs taken of her two daughters during the summers of their childhood. Though the project began in 1993 and continued through 2002, it wasn’t until both daughters were old enough to grant their permission did de Lange take the step of exhibiting the work.

The images depict the two girls enjoying their summers out of doors, barefoot and often bare-bodied, in a dark and grainy, high-contrast style. In the photographs, the children seem to be a part of the nature around them, with dirt and grass clinging to knees and feet, with hoods of a...

Thomas Allen - Epilogue

Foley Gallery is pleased to announce the third solo exhibition of photographer Thomas Allen.

The title of Allen’s exhibition, Epilogue, reveals that Allen is ready to give us the final word. The artist is ready to retire his x-acto blade and bid farewell to the pulp fiction genre that he has so thoroughly cut-up and mined for the last seven years. Allen’s final foray finds the characters that he has so effectively brought to life entering reluctant tableaux that heralds their demise.  Whether it is death, the end of love, a showdown or a last curtain call.

His unmistakable talent for creating ...
