artnet Online auctions is currently featuring April in Paris, a special sale of 100 photographs by 50 renowned artists including including Brassaï, Robert Doisneau, Henri Cartier-Bresson, André Kertész and Willy Ronis.
Leading the sale are modern masterworks by artists including Eugène Atget, Brassaï, André Kertész, Germaine Krull, and Man Ray. Among the highlights is a complete portfolio of 10 classic images of Paris by Brassaï, printed in 1973. The portfolio is signed, dated, and numbered from an edition of 50 only (estimate: $40,000-$50,000).
The auction also features some of the most universally recognized photographs of Paris by photojournalists Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Doisneau, Elliott Erwitt, Marc Riboud and Willy Ronis, including Riboud's Painter on the Eiffel Tower, Paris, 1953, (estimate: $3,800-$4,200) andLe Petit Parisien, 1952, by Willy Ronis (estimate: $5,000-$6,000).
Fashion photographers also figure prominently in the sale, with works ranging from Mainbocher Corset, Paris photographed by Horst P. Horst in 1939 for Paris Vogue (estimate: $16,000-$20,000) to In My Apartment, Paris, 1978, a provocative nude by Helmut Newton (estimate: $25,000-30,000).
Other sale highlights include portraits of legendary Paris residents Samuel Beckett, James Joyce and Pablo Picasso by Bob Adelman, Joseph Breitenbach, Arnold Newman and Lucien Clergue, and a selection of vintage photographs of Parisian scenes.
