Anne-Karin Furunes (born1961 in Trondheim) is a Norwegian artist who has developed her own original technique. Her works are acrylic paintings on canvas, with the image formed by hundreds and thousands of holes of different size. The works are based on photographs according to which Furunes perforates the canvas in a freehand manner. The artist often works with archive photographs, which almost always are of literary content of a political and historical nature.
The pictures of this exhibition are from the collections of a Swedish archive focusing on racial research, which was particularly active from the 1920s to the 1940s. The people in Furunes's works are almost always serious and the works never fail to make an impression on the viewer. The beauty and innocence of the young subjects and their faith in life are in shocking contrast with the historical background of the images.
Furunes is one of the most successful Norwegian artists on the international scene. Her works have been on show in solo exhibitions in several European countries, Canada and Australia. Last autumn, Furunes's solo exhibition opened the new and magnificent exhibition space of Gallery Barry Friedman in New York.
The exhibitions will be mounted on Tuesday 12 August. The opening will be on Thursday 14 August from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
