Peter Hutchinson, born in England in 1930, has been living and working in Provincetown, Massachusetts, since 1953. As one of the pioneers of Land Art, he is represented in such renowned collections as the Musée d'Art Moderne/Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Museum Boijmans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam, the Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Basle, the National Gallery of Art, Washington and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Following a whole line of solo exhibitions at Galerie Bugdahn und Kaimer - in 1993, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2005 - the gallery now presents the series "Man's Condition" from 1976. This cycle of twenty-seven parts is a unique piece and consists of 13 photographic diptychs (each panel is 102 x 76 cm / 40 x 30 inches) and an additional text sheet 28 x 35 cm / 11 x 14 inches. The top photos are in color and the bottom photos in black and white. Each part is inscribed with a word, whose initial letters form the title "Man's Condition".
The color photos represent the best conditions of man, the lower black and white ones the worst conditions, with relationships apparent between the two - for instance, considering the element water, there is a color photo of the sea at sunrise and below, a black and white photo of a water tower in an urban slum.
