More than 1000 works by 100 artists from 30 countries of the world - Lithuania or Latvia, Norway of Italy, Canada or Australia ... in 7 venues during seventy days of exhibitions, meetings, portfolio reviews, Nights of Photography and other events during more than seventy days. This is Kaunas Photo 07, a festival formerly known as Kaunas Photo Days.
The annual festival Kaunas Photo'07 launches its fourth edition from 12 September. The theme of this years' festival is ‘Secrets, Mysteries, Illusions' and will include over 100 photographers from around the world in private and group exhibitions, workshops and presentations and slide-shows. The autumn session of Kaunas Photo'07 will begin with the Night of Photography, where photographs will be presented in unconventional settings, not only in traditional galleries and museums but also in more accessible commercial venues including banks or public transport locations.
Kaunas Photo'07 is the largest annual photo festival in the Baltics and one of the most significant art festivals in Lithuania and is a member of international organisations such as the Photo Festival Union and Festivals of Light.
Since its beginning in 2004, the festival has been making a point of including stars of photography alongside talented newcomers. Artists like Ben Shahn (USA), Ismo Hölttö (Finland), Lennart Olson (Sweden), Astrid Kruse Jensen (Denmark), Marc Paygnard, Alain Desvergnes (France), Olivo Barbieri (Italy), Lubo Stacho (Slovakia) and many others have been exposed or were guests at the Kaunas Photo festival.
As festival founder and director, former student at Arles, Mindaugas Kavaliauskas points out, little by little the profile of Kaunas photo festival has developed into that a festival of premieres, when both works of stars and emerging photographers are shown for the first time in Lithuania, in the Baltic region, in Europe, or they are world premieres, like the exhibition of this year's Kaunas Photo 07 Grand Prix Winner Reiner Riedler from Austria.
The opening of this session of Kaunas Photo 07 will feature a presentation of three laureates of Kaunas Photo'07 – Austrian Grand Prix winner Reiner Riedler with his ‘Artificial Holidays', Italian Marco Ambrosi & Monica Dengo and Australian, Graham Miller with his 'Suburban Melancholy'. The Introductory series of exhibitions will be compemented by works of artists to have received special mentions of Kaunas Photo Jury: Serbian Katarina Radovic, Canadian Jean-François Bérubé and a rising star of Lithuanian photography Vidas Biveinis.
Kaunas Photo 07 will also honour stars of the international photographic scene. Pawel Zak (Poland), will present his famous series ‘My Close Acquaintance'. Alnis Stakle (Latvia) will exhibit his new work – ‘Living Space Daugavpils'. Toshiki Ozawa (Japan) will disclose his long-term project about Lithuania and an emerging Belarusian photographer Andrei Liankevich, with his touching series about life in Belarus.
Kaunas Photo'07 is dedicated to both photography lovers and professionals, stars and beginners: “Aside from the exhibitions there are workshops held by visiting guests. The traditional highlight events – Nights of Photography – reminds us that photography is alive not only in daylight, but also in trendy city pubs, illuminated by music and the colours of the night. There will also be portfolio reviews and an exhibition of the students and graduates from the visiting schools of photography – Ostkreuzschule (Berlin, Germany) and Studio Marangoni (Florence, Italy).”
Another initiative of Kaunas Photo is bringing photography to unexpected venues. This year the festival enters the salons of style of household ‘SBA Ideas For Home', where over 300 photos will be exhibited. Every year Kaunas Photo has been introducing a new means of dialogue between photography and the audience. This time the festival places photographic pictures as main accents of interior. Art photographs will become not only as an essential interior elements, but objects to purchase for collectioneers and those willing to top their home interiors by adding a point of originality.
The decisive Kaunas Photo 07 exhibition ‘Secrets, Mysteries and Illusions' will open on 18 October in Kaunas Picture Gallery, National M. K. Čiurlionis Museum. The works of over 70 artists will give viewers the chance to discover the mysterious, colourful, decorative and social world of the 21st century.
The scheme of Kaunas Photo festival includes photography of an invited country or region. This year, Georgian photography was on the red carpet in the spring session of Kaunas Photo '07 alongside with the project ‘Kaunas – the Town of Light' by an invited artist André Wagner (Germany).
