World Press Photo has started its annual invitation round for the 2007 World Press Photo contest and invites press photographers and photojournalists throughout the world to participate. This contest accepts photographs taken during the year 2006 and intended for publication. The deadline for entering is 11 January 2007.

From 27 January until 8 February 2007, 13 recognized international experts in the field of press photography are judging all entries at the World Press Photo office in Amsterdam. This jury will be chaired by Michele McNally (USA), assistant managing editor for The New York Times (see Consulter le lien for the entire jury).

World Press Photo accepts single pictures and stories/portfolios in the following ten categories: Spot News, General News, People in the News, Sports Action, Sports Features, Contemporary Issues, Daily Life, Arts and Entertainment, Portraits, and Nature.

The winners will be announced during a press conference at 11 a.m. CET on 9 February 2007 at the Amsterdam city hall and on the World Press Photo website.

The prizewinning pictures are then presented in a traveling exhibition that will be displayed in about 90 cities in 55 countries starting in Amsterdam at the end of April. The exhibition is accompanied by a yearbook published in 6 languages.

World Press Photo is the largest annual press photography contest in the world. In the 2006 contest, 4,448 photographers from 122 countries participated submitting a total of 83,044 photographs.

In 2005 the World Press Photo foundation celebrated its 50th anniversary, marking the first ever contest and exhibition organized in Amsterdam in December 1955. The 2007 contest is the 50th competition in succession, with no contests held in the years 1959, 1961 and 1970.

World Press Photo receives support from the Dutch Postcode Lottery and is sponsored worldwide by Canon and TNT.
