The Noorderlicht Photo Festival

The location of the Noorderlicht Photo Festival, the largest annual photo festival in The Netherlands, alternates between Groningen and Leeuwarden. The Friesian edition has always been devoted to photography from a non-Western region. Previous Friesian editions included Africa Inside (2000), Mundos Creados (2002) en Nazar (2004).

Nazar has now been seen in six countries, and has attracted over 95,000 visitors internationally.

2006: Another Asia - Photography from South and Southeast Asia

South and South East Asia are rapidly becoming central actors on the world stage. The economic growth there overshadows that of Europe and the United States, and new Asian capital plays an increasingly important role in Western economies. Its economic success is accompanied by serious friction between modern and traditional social structures, and the great and long-standing contrasts in the political, economic, religious and social realms are becoming sharper. These changes impact radically on everyday life - and are reflected in the turbulent growth of photography.

Asia is generally associated with China, South Korea and Japan. For the first time, Another Asia is offering a comprehensive picture of the other Asia. In over 700 photos, from portraits to landscapes, from poetic to documentary, photographers from India, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, The Philippines and other countries provide a surprising picture of this region, from the inside. They sketch the success story - and the stories that it hides.

Satellite Program

As is the case for every Noorderlicht Festival, in addition to the main exhibition there is an extensive Satellite Program with work by famous and lesser-known professional photographers and amateurs, from The Netherlands and abroad. Museums, galleries and one-time only exhibition sites in and around Leeuwarden join in the Festival with special programming. Once again, the Satellite Program will offer a sampler of photography.

Activities and education

During the Festival activities regarding the theme of the main exhibition will be organized both in the Fries Museum and at other locations. Lectures, discussions and film screenings are among the activities scheduled. There is also a full educational program with guided tours and viewer's guides.
