Images of the Future
First national photo competition in Afghanistan organized by AINA, Centre Culturel Français and Goethe-Institut / German Cultural Centre.
Afghanistan is recovering from 25 difficult years. The country still has a long way to go, but a lot has already been achieved: engineers build new streets, schools, hospitals, Universities form new teachers lawyers and doctors, busyness men re-launch trade and commerce, politicians worked out a new constitution and the citizens have elected a new parliament.
With this project we want to encourage young artists, professionals and amateurs, to have a look at their country from an artistic perspective, not only to document the actual situation, but as well to look for perspectives for the future.
Five years ago the member states of the United Nations agreed upon 8 goals which the world should achieve by the year 2015 in order to fight against poverty and underdevelopment. These eight goals were published as the “Millenium Development goals”.
In 2005 Afghanistan signed the Millenium Development Goals declaration and committed itself as all the other UN member states did. These eight goals, which Afghanistan wants to achieve, are:
1 Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
2 Achieve universal primary education
3 Promote gender equality and empower women
4 Reduce child mortality
5 Improve maternal health
6 Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
7 Ensure environmental sustainability
8 Develop a global partnership for development
We have chosen as a title for our project “Images of the Future” and we want to invite the participating photographers to have a close look at these Development Goals and ask themselves how the ideas behind these goals can be put into images.
> Further information on the Millenium Goals and their relevance for Afghanistan can be found in the internet under : www.undp.org/mdg/countryreports.html
