BORDERNOTES. Every issue of Border Crossings begins with an essay by editor Meeka Walsh. In this issue, Walsh looks at the shifting identities of self and other in Claude Cahun, whose work has recently been exhibited in a retrospective at Jeu de Paume in Paris, and tours to the Art Institute of Chicago and La Virreina Centre de la Imatge in Barcelona in 2011/2012.

INTERVIEWS. In a compelling interview with Robert Enright, British artist Gillian Wearing discusses masking the exterior to uncover internal truths, identifying the universal among the anonymous, and finding her own voice in the stories of strangers.

"I say those moments fit like the fist fits the eye" remarks the acclaimed Vancouver-based photographer Fred Herzog, speaking to Border Crossings about sixty years of capturing serendipity through the vibrant realism of colour photography.

New York-based photographer Alison Rossiter describes the fantastic world of her darkroom, where alchemy and time travel take place, as decaying photographic paper becomes a prairie lake or a starry night, and new images from old material take you back to a past that never was.

And Canadian photographer Susan Dobson articulates the uncertainties in her work, in the destabilizing suburban and retail spaces she photographs, and in the shifting of technologies and tenses—from darkroom to digital, taking a captured past into a technological future.

ARTICLES. Stephen Horne explores Lynne Cohen's photographed interiors, discovering in them the intriguing tension of "stage sets waiting for an action to begin."

Daniel Baird assays the continuum of self, as embodied, and expanded, by Suzy Lake in her experiments in self-portraiture.

And Lee Henderson follows the flux in Evan Lee's photoconceptual work and in his approach to new technologies: "Seen through his artwork, the changes to photography are all liberations."

ALSO IN THIS ISSUE: PHOTO PORTFOLIO by Jessica Eaton in her "Cubes for Albers and Lewitt" series.

BORDERVIEWS on the mysteriously prolific and previously unseen work of Vivian Maier; Sarah Anne Johnson's playful, timely and provocative "Arctic Wonderland"; the "edgy brightness" of Steve Ackerman's black-and-white photography; and the merging of stellar and cellular in Andrew Wright's "Coronae" series.

And our extensive CROSSOVERS section, with reviews of recent exhibitions of Stan Douglas, Rodney Graham and Tacita Dean, Anna von Gwinner and Markus Schädel, Kent Monkman, Davida Nemeroff, Guillermo Trejo, Elspeth Pratt, Susan Feindel, The Otolith Group, Thomas Hirschhorn and Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle, the Venice Biennale, Donigan Cumming, "The Durable Idiom", Allison Schulnik, Jessica Groome, Anri Sala, "Voices of Fire: toward a post Postmodern theory of Abstraction", and Gordon Lebredt: Nonworks.

Border Crossings is a quarterly cultural magazine published in Winnipeg. Its subject is contemporary Canadian and international art and culture, which the magazine investigates through articles, columns, reviews, profiles, interviews and portfolios.
