New York - Phillips de Pury & Company is pleased to announce the highlights of the forthcoming Photographs sale on Saturday 9 April 2011, to be held at its Park Avenue location.

“We are looking forward to bringing the Photographs preview to our flagship space at 57 Street and Park Avenue. The uptown location will be a fresh setting to showcase our exhibition, comprised of a diverse selection of classic and contemporary photographs to fulfill the needs of our international clientele.” Vanessa Kramer, Worldwide Director of Photographs.


Highlights of the New York Photographs sale include: Cindy Sherman’s Untitled #278, 1993, estimated at $200,000-$300,000, exemplifying the famed photographer’s poignant critiques of the fashion industry, juxtaposed by one of the most revered images in classic fashion photography: Irving Penn’s Woman in Palace (Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn) Marrakech, Morocco, 1951, estimated at $80,000-$120,000, which commemorates the most dynamic fashion duo of its era. Additional highlights include: Florian Maier-Aichen’s Untitled, 2005, estimated at $80,000-$120,000, which majestically depicts the awe-inspiring Mt. Williamson; Robert Mapplethorpe’s Flag, 1987, estimated at $70,000-$90,000, which ranks among the photographer’s most celebrated images for its solemn reverence; Diane Arbus’s A Jewish giant at home with his parents in the Bronx, N.Y., 1970, estimated at $60,000-$80,000; Edward Weston’s Nude, New Mexico, 1937, estimated at $50,000-$70,000; Peter Beard’s Tsavo North on the Athi Tiva, circa 150 lbs.-160 lbs. side Bull Elephant, February, 1965, estimated at $50,000- $70,000; and Richard Avedon’s Bob Dylan, Singer, 132nd Street and FDR Drive, November 4, 1963, estimated at $40,000-$60,000.


Classic photography will be well represented by a number of photographs, including six works by Robert Frank. Undoubtedly among the pillars of classic American photography, Frank’s iconic series, The Americans, accounts for four of the photographs offered: Fourth of July- Jay, New York, 1955, estimated at $50,000-$70,000; Cafe?-Beaufort, South Carolina, 1955, estimated at $40,000- $60,000; Assembly line- Detroit, 1955, estimated at $25,000-$35,000; and Hotel Lobby, Miami Beach, 1955, estimated at $20,000-$30,000. Other works from Frank’s oeuvre include Paris New Year (Young Man with Tulip), 1949, estimated at $40,000-$60,000 and From the Bus, New York, 1958, estimated at $25,000- $35,000. Five additional works by legendary photographer Irving Penn, capturing the breadth of his work, further embolden the classic selections in the sale: Red Apples, July 15, 1985, estimated at $60,000-$80,000; Blast Furnace Tender, New York, 1951, estimated at $30,000-$50,000; Miles Davis hand and trumpet, New York, July 1, 1986, estimated at $25,000-$35,000; Saint Laurent, Braque Inspired Fashion, Paris, 1988, estimated at $12,000-$18,000; and Gorilla (Male), 1986, estimated at $10,000-$15,000. Additional examples of classic photography include Ansel Adams’s Winter Sunrise, the Sierra Nevada from Lone Pine, California, 1944, estimated at $30,000-$50,000; and works by Man Ray, Helen Levitt, Josef Sudek, Berenice Abbott, Harry Callahan, and Manuel Alvarez Bravo.


Fashion photography will be illustrated by classic and contemporary examples, including two works by Peter Lindbergh: Kate Moss, Harper's Bazaar US, Long Island, NY, USA, 1994, estimated at $50,000-$70,000, and Estelle Lefebure, Karen Alexander, Rachel Williams, Linda Evangelista, Tatjana Patitz, Christy Turlington, Vogue US, Santa Monica, CA, USA,1988 estimated at $20,000-$30,000; Patrick Demarchelier’s Princess Diana, London, 1990, estimated at $20,000-$30,000; Horst P. Horst’s Mainbocher Corset, Paris, August 11, 1939, estimated at $20,000-$30,000; Albert Watson’s Kate Moss, Marrakech, 1993, estimated at $15,000-$20,000; and three works by Richard Avedon: Sunny Harnett, model. Dress by Gre?s. Casino, Le Touquet, Paris, August, 1954, estimated at $15,000- $20,000; ‘Homage to Munkacsi’. Carmen, model. Coat by Cardin. Place Franc?ois 1er, Paris, August, 1957, estimated at $10,000-$15,000; and Marlene Dietrich, Turban by Dior, The Ritz, Paris, August, 1955, estimated at $10,000-$15,000. Additional examples of fashion photography include works by Herb Ritts, Helmut Newton, Louis Faurer, Lillian Bassman, William Klein and Sante d’Orazio.


Contemporary Photography will be brilliantly showcased with a strong number of works, including David LaChapelle’s Statue, Los Angeles, 2007, estimated at $60,000-$80,000; Elger Esser’s Doubt, Frankreich, 1999, estimated at $50,000- $70,000; Hiroshi Sugimoto’s Casa Batllo, Antonio Gaudi, 1998, estimated at $50,000-$70,000; two works by Desiree Dolron: Xteriors VI, 2003, estimated at $40,000-$60,000, and Xteriors XI, 2001-2002, estimated at $30,000-$50,000; Shirin Neshat’s Women in a Line from Rapture, 1999, estimated at $40,000-$60,000; Candida Hofer’s Real Gabinete Portuguès de Leitura Rio de Janeiro II, 2005, estimated at $40,000-$60,000; and Sam Taylor-Wood’s Soliloquy VIII, 2000, estimated at $40,000-$60,000. Other outstanding examples of contemporary photography include David Hockney’s Walking in the Zen Garden at the Ryoanji Temple, Kyoto, Feb. 21st, 1983, estimated at $35,000-$55,000; Barry Frydlender’s Friday, 2002, estimated at $30,000-$50,000; Andres Serrano’s Piss Christ from Immersions, 1987, estimated at $30,000-$50,000; and Marilyn Minter’s Cyclone, 2006, estimated at $25,000-$35,000. Additional contemporary photographers whose works demonstrate the versatility and appeal of the genre, include Richard Prince, Ahmet Ertug?, Vik Muniz, Massimo Vitali, Adam Fuss, Edward Burtynsky, Adi Nes, Gabriel Orozco, Robert Polidori, Nobuyoshi Araki, Vee Speers, and Pieter Hugo.

The selected highlights viewing is scheduled to coincide with The Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD) photography show.
