Photographic Gallery Hippolyte publishes a unique collection renewing the tradition of the photographic portfolio. Ikkuna (the Finnish word for “window”) reflects the vitality and creative state of photographic art in Finland today. Ten prominent photographic artists have been invited to participate with work that examine the representational qualities of photography as well as its ability to tell a story.
The selection of the works has developed in a process of discussions amongst the participating artists. Most of the works are presented for the first time in this portfolio. The selection also includes work, which is only available in this portfolio. Ikkuna contains ten original archival pigment ink prints on cotton paper in an issue of thirty numbered and signed copies. The portfolio is accompanied by a booklet, which includes the artists’ thoughts on their artistic work.
The case has a clever design by the innovative designer duo Johannes Nieminen and Camilla Pentti. The portfolio can be hung on the wall or placed standing otherwise. The art work under the glass cover can be changed according to choice and humour. The case is made out of recycled iroko wood from the former building of The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Helsinki.
The production of the porfolio has been coordinated by photographic artist Sakari Viika.
The portfolio Ikkuna is launched on Thursday 4 November 2010 at Photographic Gallery Hippolyte in Helsinki, where the portfolio and included prints are on display in Hippolyte Studio. The portfolio is on sale in Photographic Gallery Hippolyte during the exhibition until 28 November 2010, launch price 2700 €. After the exhibition the portfolio’s price is 3000 €.
