A unique new history of contemporary photojournalism to mark the 50th anniversary of World Press Photo. « Things As They Are » presents the story of photojournalism over 50 years, taking us from the heyday of « Life Magazine » and the defining « Family of Man » exhibition through to the era of the cameraphone. The story is told through the presentation of 120 landmark photojournalism stories as they were first seen on the pages of newspapers and magazines, revealing how the events of the world, the art of photographers, and the interests of publishers and the press have converged on the printed page. Selected on the basis of nominations by photographers, editors and historians around the world, the book includes features by Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Larry Burrows, Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Nan Goldin, Don McCullin, Mary Ellen Mark, Susan Meiselas, James Nachtwey, Helmut Newton, Martin Parr, Irving Penn, Gilles Peress, Daido Moriyama, Eugene Richards, Sebastião Salgado, W. Eugene Smith and Bruce Weber. « Things As They Are » contains over 800 photographs, a timeline featuring the winners of the World Press Photo annual contest and introductions by Mary Panzer and World Press Photo, as well as an afterword essay by Christian Caujolle. The 400-page hardback will be published in October 2005 by Chris Boot. A parallel Dutch edition is due to be published by Sdu, and a US edition by Aperture. Contributors Mary Panzer is a cultural historian and writer on photography based in New York. Her titles include « Mathew Brady and the Image of History » (1997), « Lewis Hine » (2002) and « Mathew Brady » (2001). Christian Caujolle is an editor, writer and photography critic who lives in Paris. He is director of Agence VU, the photo agency and gallery. Chris Boot is a London-based editor and publisher whose recent books include « Lodz Ghetto Album » (2004) and « No Man's Land » by Larry Towell.
